Hi, community! Is the option to sync authenticator codes in the cloud with the Bitwarden account now available?
I recently started using the Bitwarden authenticator and I’m afraid of losing the codes because it doesn’t have cloud sync. If it’s not available, is there a scheduled release date? The backup option hasn’t worked, when I press activate, nothing happens.
Hm, when I press on “backup” (or whatever it is exactly called in English, as I have the German version and the language can’t be changed as it seems), it only gives me the option to press “OK” or “More info to that”. - Pressing OK should be enough for enabling it. (and BTW, that backup option uses the backup option of your device, so either Google One or iCloud)
Another option you could choose right now: make an export. Unfortunately, there is no encrypted export possible in the current version (here is a Feature Request to that: Encrypted Offline Backup/Export option). And here more info to making an export in the Authenticator app: Import and Export | Bitwarden
I don’t necessarily want to sync it with the Bitwarden Password Manager. I want to sync it separately. Will that work?
If not, is 2FAS a good alternative?
PS: As authenticator app version 2025.6.0 and mobile app versions 2025.6.0 (iOS) / 2025.6.1 (Android) are available, the sync function can be used now as it seems… or not?! → For me, it doesn’t work yet on Android (just tried it)…
PPS: It does work now. In my case, I deleted the app data of the authenticator app (only do that when you don’t have any relevant data in there!), and after that, the authenticator app offered the sync with the next start.
Just saw the sync option in Bitwarden but I don’t understand how or what it is supposed to be syncing. I’ve read the release note and the “how to enable sync” instruction, but they don’t explain it’s supposed to do (in a way I understand anyway).
So would you mind explaining, maybe with an example, what it actually does?
I’m not sure if I can say more than there is in the Help Sites… In essence, the sync function can sync TOTP “codes” between the dedicated (BW) authenticator app and the integrated authenticator of the Bitwarden password manager apps (and therefore, your Bitwarden account/vault).
→ so it seems, there are some options, what you want to sync / which TOTP codes… i.e. it’s not automatically “sync all TOTP codes” (and I guess, what they call “local codes” in the text, are TOTP “codes” in the authenticator app, as they are stored locally on the device that has the authenticator app installed, when you don’t sync the authenticator app with the Bitwarden password manager/vault)
the sync function can be used now as it seems … or not?!
Did you manage to get it working? I’m on the latest version of both apps (iOS). I see the option to “Sync with Bitwarden app” on my Authenticator. But when pressed, it just opens up my Password Manager.
There doesn’t seem to be the toggle (as mentioned) in the help site. or atleast not that I can find. Is it very obvious or quite hidden for you?
Can’t seem to find a guide anywhere else either.. Suppose if it’s just pending rollout I’ll give it a couple more days.
Yes. After I deleted the app data of the authenticator app, it got resetted and initialized the sync with the next start. (I only deleted the app data, because I had no relevant TOTP codes in it)
Sorry, I’m on Android and not on iOS. – On Android, for me it was like described in the Help Sites: in the mobile password manager app (!), I had to “Allow authenticator syncing” (Settings → Account security).
