I could not login just now on my Pixel6 - I kept getting the bad username or password message - I usually use the fingerprint login. After numerous attempts I rebooted the phone but that didn’t help and I kept getting the password login again.
So I uninstalled the BW app and then re-installed it, which did actually allow me to then login with the password - but then I tried a couple of times to set up the fingerprint login but it never worked and keeps requiring the password login - what has happened?
There is no such thing as “fingerprint login”. Biometrics (like fingerprints) can only be used to unlock a Bitwarden app that is already logged in, not to log in when the app is logged out.
Check your app settings — what is the Vault Timeout action set to (Lock or Log out)? Is Unlock with Biometrics enabled?
Ah . . thanks for the fast response, I see what you mean - it has been so long since I did anything in Settings menu I have forgotten stuff - but I still don’t understand - usually the phone has gone for months without requiring a password login - with many reboots etc and still only needing a biometric login - how can that be if what you say is true?
Usually, when you set up biometrics on a mobile, it’s configured as a biometric unlock. Since Bitwarden isn’t usually set to log out on timeout by default—only to lock—and there’s no requirement to enter your master password on first start, you’re almost never logged out and rarely have to enter a password. Occasionally, for unclear reasons, the server logs you out on updates, forcing you to log in again with your password.
You should check the parameters @grb mentioned. You can also post a screenshot of the Settings > Account security screen, although you may need to enable Allow screen capture in Settings > Others first.
OK, that all makes sense I think - the only bit left unexplained is why the passwd prompt happened at all - my your server issue? - and why I couldn’t log back in using the passwd until after I re-installed? Thanks for the help!
Yes, done that now - on a 4hr Vault Timeout action set to UnLock with Biometrics again. - Thanks!
On Microsoft Windows, there’s an adage for troubleshooting unknown problems: first reboot and see if it goes away. Bitwarden has similar troubleshooting rituals for unknown issues. On Android you can:
Log out, clear the app data and cache, log in, and see if the problem goes away.
Uninstall and reinstall the app, and see if the problem goes away.
If either works, just let the sleeping tiger lie (). Maybe it fixed a bad update or bad binaries, or it cleared some intermediary data the app couldn’t resolve.
Kidding aside, on Android, in Settings > About > Flight Recorders, the logs supposedly record more information when working with support.
Ha! - I remember the bad old days . . I have been using Linux since the 0.9 kernels . .
Your description is my usual approach - if I find something that fixes the problem I just continue on . . but I was a bit more curious this time - just because BW is mission-critical for me I guess - and I had a little time to post . .
