Can't login on new iPad

I’m using Bitwarden on PC and iphone.
Got a new ipad, logged into Bitwarden app with Masterpassword.
It sends me thru WebAuth.
I select iPhone, Ipad, or Android device.
It gives me a QR code. I scan with my iphone.(17.6.1)
It says connecting…
Iphone says "you don’t have any passkeys saved for this webisite or app. You may be able to choose a passkey to use from teh app below
(Bitwarden). I select continue and it takes me to a blank “add item” screen.
The ipad then says “An error occurred”
Rinse. Repeat.

So how do I login from ipad???

I’m about ready to find another password manager, this is so aggravating.

@humpbee Welcome to the forum!

What method do you use for two-step login when logging in to a Bitwarden client app on your PC or iPhone?

I use a Yubikey

@humpbee Hi!

With “Bitwarden app” you mean the Bitwarden mobile app, right?

What does “It sends me thru WebAuth.” mean? Does that mean you choose FIDO2/WebAuthn as your 2FA option?

And are “iPhone, iPad or Android device” the only options you then get offered or are there other options?

You should select “Security Key”.

OK, I select security key and it says:
“To continue with Bitwarden, insert and activate one of your security keys.”

There is no USB port on the ipad to insert the Yubikey. How would I do that?

I select “Log in with master password” enter it, and then the next screen says “Launch WebAuthn”.
Then the next screen says:
Choose how you’d like to sign in to Bitwarden:
-iPhone, iPad or Android device
-Security key

Continue

Either NFC (if your YubiKey and your iPad support it both) or do you have a Lightning port (Edit afterwards for future readers: or USB-C port)? For the latter: I know there are many from USB-A/B to USB-C… I don’t know if there are adapters from USB to Lightning… otherwise you may have to think about a YubiKey with Lightning port.

If nothing of that is possible for you, you may have to use another 2FA option on your iPad (and obviously have to set that up in the Bitwarden web vault first for that).

You would need a Yubikey that is compatible with your iPad, or perhaps you can find an adapter that will allow you to connect your current Yubikey to the iPad.

In the meantime, you would have to enable an alternative two-step login method if you want to log in to Bitwarden using your iPad device.

Damn this is complicated. Thanks guys. That explains it.

Lightning to USB adapters abound, A or C.

OK, so I bought an adapter an no luck.

Choose how you’d like to sign in to Bitwarden:
I select ‘Security Key’
It tells me to insert and activate on of my security keys.
I insert my YubiKey with the USB to lighning adapter.
It comes back and says ‘No Credentials found for Bitwarden on this security key. Try again with a different security key.’

This is same key I use to sign in on my PC, and same one I use the NFC to log in on my iphone.

Any more ideas?

Nope, sorry. I was just handling the mechanical side. I do not use Yubikey.

… and I don’t have any Apple products. :man_shrugging:

One thing I can think of: either the adapter is not compatible (doesn’t work with the YubiKey and/or the iPad). - I don’t think, inserting the key before makes any difference?

So, I would test (if you can) and try to get information about compatibility of the adapter. Also check the link, @grb provided above - you may need to buy a (for your iPad compatible) YubiKey with a Lightning port…

Oh, wait - to the last thing: didn’t Apple also change (partially?) to USB-C? Maybe it isn’t a Lightning port but just a USB-C port? Then you would need a USB-A/B to USB-C adapter. Check your model, what port it really is.

If it is indeed USB-C, then Sorry, that I didn’t think of that before.

I would suggest using the following website to determine whether your iPad is able to communicate with your Yubikey at all:

https://www.yubico.com/genuine/

It seems that the issue you are experiencing is a compatibility problem between your iPad, your Yubikey, and/or your USB-to-Lightning adapter. It is does not seem to be a Bitwarden issue.

If you are able to use the Yubikey Verification page to detect the Yubikey when attached to your iPad (perhaps after changing your adapter, updating your operating system, etc.), then we can check again if you are able to use the Yubikey as your Bitwarden 2FA.

I visited the site
And it worked on the iPad with yubikey plugged into adapter which is plugged into lightning port.

Says Yubico device verified.

(And yes it is a lightning port. iPad gen9

Update:
I just successfully logged in from my iPad thru the web with yubikey

However tried again to log in to app, and same problems, it doesn’t work, and so I cannot set it as my password manager in settings.

I’m about to switch to something else. Shouldn’t be this hard.

Which app? Mobile app or Desktop app? Which version?

Bitwarden Password Manager from iOS App Store
2024.9.2

@humpbee Hey, I just saw the tag “self-hosting” and I think this was not addressed here yet: if you’re not on the latest server version, you might have to update that as well, as there is an “incompatibility” with the new mobile app and older server versions.
