Cant get autofill to work on new device

I have been using autofill for ages on my desktop (Windows 10, Firefox extension) without a problem. Now I want to be able to use my laptop (Win 11, firefox extension) as well to do autofill on the same bank websites.
I installed the firefox extension on the laptop. I had a lot of trouble with 2FA, since the verification emails took so long to arrive (the last one has still not arrived after 1 hour; in contrast the verification email for this forum just arrived within a minute, so don’t think there’s a problem with my Thunderbird email system). Because of this on the desktop I turned off 2FA. Now I can logon to my Bitwarden vault on the laptop, and it all looks OK. But if I now use firefox to go to a bank website on the laptop and try to use autofill (either Ctrl-shift-L or rclick on the logon field and select Bitwarden/autofill logon/logon to your vault) I get Bitwarden login window: enter email - OK/continue/login with master password - enter it and press login with master password it thinks for 1-2 secs then comes back with same login with M P - indefinitely. I have checked and rechecked both email and MP, and repeated the above several times. BTW this has even happened when in the same firefox instance I am logged into Bitwarden! I also sometimes get a window saying “New device verification required” even though, as I say, I can login to Bitwarden. So maybe I need to turn 2FA back on, but I can’t because it needs a verification email…
I have spent many hours going round in circles trying to get this sorted and am really fed up now. I don’t want to change to another password manager as I’ve got used to using bitwarden on the desktop.
Thank you for any help.
Peter

Hey there, in the web app, you can choose any type of 2FA you prefer, such as webauthn security key, authenticator app etc.. email is optional.

@peterj1 Welcome to the forum!

There seem to be several things going wrong on your laptop. For one, having disabled 2FA, each new Bitwarden app or browser extension installed on the laptop will be subject the New Device Verification requirements (i.e., you will need to enter a verification code received by email). Moreover, if you are using Firefox in Private mode (or otherwise clearing browser data on a regular basis), you will need to repeat the New Device Verification each time that the browser data are cleared. The best solution would be to use your desktop computer to log in to the Web Vault (e.g., vault.bitwarden.com), and enable a 2FA method that is not email-based (e.g., a TOTP authenticator or a Passkey); also make sure to retrieve (and securely store) your 2FA reset code.

To avoid this, it is recommended to change the Timeout Action from “Logout” to “Lock” (by going to Settings > Account Security >Vault Timeout).

This sounds either like a bug (perhaps something related to Github Issue #16191), or a corrupt installation. You could try uninstalling the Bitwarden browser extension, clearing your browser data, and then reinstalling the extension.

Thank you both for your prompt and useful replies.

After a certain amount of cursing, I have managed to get TOTP (which I’d never heard of) working, using the 2FAS Windows app on both desktop and laptop. I have also, as recommended, noted my recovery code.

Your help and expertise are very much appreciated.

Peter

And your issue with the “infinite loop” master password login prompt has disappeared?

I’ve not seen that again.
