Cannot figure out how to install Safari extension

I can’t figure out how to install the browser extension for Safari. When I click on the icon for Safari on the Bitwarden home page, I get the download for the entire software package – which I’ve already installed.

I am unable to find anything in the app itself offering me the option to install browser extensions. So how/where do I install the extension for Safari?

This depends on the version of macOS you are using.

With macOS 10.14 (Mojave), Apple switched to Safari App Extensions while the old extensions were still supported, 10.15 (Catalina) now requires App Extensions. Older versions do NOT support App Extensions.

So if you are on 10.14 or newer, simply download the Bitwarden app. The extension appears automatically in Safari’s preference menu.

If you are on 10.13 or older, you can try to install the old extension which was available here:
https://safari-extensions.apple.com/details/?id=com.bitwarden.safari-LTZ2PFU5D6

I’m not sure if this still works or if Apple already removed the Extensions Gallery. At least on Catalina, the link redirects to the App Store.

Your best bet is to upgrade to 10.14 or 10.15, since the old extension is not being updated anymore even if you can install it.

Thanks for the info – much appreciated. I’m still on El Capitan (10.11) and, although the extension is available, it makes the application unresponsive (therefore I never get to the browser itself – just an endless loop of crashing). Once I update my iOS I’ll see if the Bitwarden app itself will work. Meanwhile, I can just use Safari on my mobile device (where Bitwarden easily integrates) rather than on my desktop.
