I am very new to Bitwarden. I am using the free plan on my laptop and android phone until I get the hang of things and will likely move to Premium. (I still have an active Roboform account which I am hoping to delete in the future.) I am also not very skilled with computer tech. When I imported my stuff from Roboform, it imported the bookmarks too.
I notice that my vault opens showing my bookmarks. I know I start typing in the search field for a login but I’d rather not even see the bookmarks. I’d rather see the list of my password folders. I use the bookmarks folder (Firefox) to search for a bookmark.
Is there a way for me to hide all those bookmarks or force Bitwarden to show my password folders first?
Bitwarden does not have a “bookmark” feature, and I am not familiar with Roboform’s bookmarks. Thus, I assume that the Roboform bookmarks may have been imported into Bitwarden as Secure Notes. It would be helpful if you could confirm this.
Bitwarden does have the ability to filter your search results, so that you are only searching for Login items (excluding Secure Notes, Cards, and Identities). However, if you do not plan to use the bookmarks that were imported into Bitwarden, a cleaner solution may be to start over and perform the import in a way that does not import the bookmarks from Roboform.
Starting over would require you to purge all contents of your Bitwarden vault, so if you have made additions or modifications to the vault contents after importing your Roboform data, this may present an issue.
We should be able to provide some guidance and instructions, if you let us know how you’d prefer to proceed.
grb,
Thank you for your reply. I do not plan to use the bookmarks that were imported into Bitwarden. When I click the Bitwarden icon in my toolbar in Firefox, there is the search bar, autofill suggestions, favorites (I made my primary credit card a favorite), and then “All Items.” All items includes 1449 bookmarks. Uggh.
I’m fine with purging my vault and starting over. I joined within a couple weeks. I have noticed on the “Import Data to your Vault” bitwarden instruction page, that it doesn’t include instructions for Roboform. Will I be able to keep my account info (login info) and settings or will I have to start as if I am a new subscriber?
Yes, deleting the bookmarks from the .csv export and then re-importing is the way to go. However, before re-importing into your Bitwarden account, you must first “purge” your vault contents — otherwise you will just end up with duplicates of all of your login items.
To purge your vault contents, log in to the Web Vault (for example, vault.bitwarden.com), use the left-hand navigation menu to go to Settings > My Account, then scroll down until you see the red box labeled “Danger Zone”, and click the button Purge Vault. You will need to enter your master password to confirm that you wish to proceed with deletion of your vault contents.
After you have purged the old vault contents, you can use the left-hand navigation menu to go to Tools > Import Data. Under “Data”, specify “RoboForm (csv)” as the File Format, then click Choose File to upload your new .csv file (the one that no longer has the bookmarks), and click Import Data to complete the import.
Thank you. I’ll give it a try in the morning. Is it okay that there are large spaces in the csv file? ----for example: lines 4 through 73, etc. For some reason, the password files are sometimes separated from each other.
I’ve never experimented with importing a file that has gaps, so I’m not sure. But if you know how to sort a spreadsheet in Excel (or whatever spreadsheet app you are using to edit your .csv export data), then sorting the data should get rid of the blank rows. Just make sure that if your spreadsheet has a row of column headers at the top, that those headers remain at the top after you have sorted the other rows.
I couldn’t move the data to eliminate the gaps. If I was familiar with Excel I may have been able to. I decided to do the purge anyway and import the data with the gaps. It went fine except 19 blank items went into Bitwarden under notes. I just manually deleted them. FYI: the gaps in Excel were up to 72 lines of no data. I assume Bitwarden ignored the blanks and imported what it saw was real data. It appears the answer to my original query was to delete the bookmark data from the csv file in Excel and then do the import.
I was successful, with your help, since now I have all my logins imported and no bookmarks. grb, thank you so much for helping me with this.
