I have been using bitwarden for a couple of years, without major issues. I host my vault on a Synology NAS using a docker container (package is up-to-date).
A few days ago, all of a sudden, the apps on both my iphone and ipad stopped connecting, just producing the message ‘An error has occurred’ with no further info. I am using app version 2024.8.1 (1052) on both devices.
I have already tried to delete the app and re-connect - same issue.
When using Safari from the iOS devices and connecting directly through the URL of my container, the vault is accessible.
On my W10 PC, where I use firefox and the bitwarden add-in, everything works fine as well.
Potential trigger (?):
For some time other Synology apps (e.g. Drive) can no longer connect automatically after the Let’s encrypt certificate is renewed on the Synology. I then have to manually re-enter the pw and the 6-digit authentication code. No such option is given on the iOS app. The certificate on my Synology was recently renewed (but that has happened many times in the past without any issues).
Since you asked for “any ideas” and I’m not familiar with self-hosting…
Do you mean your docker container is up-to-date? Is your Bitwarden server as well up-to-date? - I think I read these days about login problems with the new native mobile apps, where an update of the Bitwarden self-hosting-server resolved this.
Here I don’t know iOS enough but if you deleted the Bitwarden app and it’s data, wouldn’t it be possible to “reset” the app on your devices, so that it can “adapt” to the new certificate (if that indeed is/was a “trigger”)?
The solution proved to be fairly simple: the newest iOS app version was no longer compatible with the old vaultwarden version I was running.
After an update to the latest version, everything started working again.
Vaultwarden is not a Bitwarden product, so there are naturally going to be compatibility issues between the Vaultwarden server and the official Bitwarden client apps from time to time. For users who are self-hosting with Vaultwarden, your best bet is to turn to the Vaultwarden community for support:
