Occasionally (like now), my Bitwarden browser extension app won’t load when I click on the button. I simply get a grey box where the popup should be and the rotating balls, implying that it’s loading, but it never does. Internet connectivity should be fine (unless this app uses a separate port or protocol) because the Windows app works at the same time. Sometimes Chrome and Edge concurrently are stuck, sometimes it’s only Edge. (Version is up to date)
@GeerDad Welcome to the forum!
I believe that this is a known bug. I’d have to review the bug reports on Github to see if the bug is supposed to have been fixed already (in case there may have been a regression).
In any case, you may be able to work around this by simply clicking the Bitwarden extension’s shield icon twice (once to close the extension pop-up, and then again to re-open the pop-up).
I appreciate your reply. Unfortunately, I’m still stuck. The close and retry doesn’t make any difference. I’ve seen other forum posts that say that solved their problem, but it seems to be specific to Chrome, or else it’s from an earlier version of the extension (2025.1.2 ?)
I’m having the problem with 2025.5.1.
There was a Chrome issue that was fixed in February, but there are some recent comments on the (now closed) bug report that indicate a similar bug has appeared in Firefox:
Another related bug report (still open) is this one:
Bitwarden has stated this bug will be fixed with the upcoming June 26 release.
I may have just resolved the issue. While browsing through the MS Edge Settings, I discovered that the “Notifications” option was set to “Block” for Bitwarden. I changed it to “Ask” and it works now. Not sure if it’s simply that the issue is intermittent or if it’s actually resolved (until corporate IT pushes more policies to change it back).
I spoke up too soon. The issue still exists. I just checked notifications in Edge for Bitwarden.com and it still says Allow, so it must have been a coincidence when it started working last time.
HELP!!! This is so frustrating when I need to rely on a password keeper for my various work logins and it’s occasionally unavailable.
We use Bitwarden at our company - we’re having several users with this issue. We use device login (no master password) with Edge. Restarting the browser usually brings it back, sometimes we’re having to clear the extension cache too.
Hi Harley, just to confirm, this persists after reinstalling the browser?
Just to clarify, are you asking that the Edge browser itself be reinstalled, or more likely that the Bitwarden browser extension be reinstalled?
Just made an account to note that I’ve run into this several times. For me, the workaround that seemed to get it resolved was disabling and reenabling the extension. In the specific case of today, it was on Edge 141.0.3537.99 x64 with extension version 2025.10.0
I was having a similar issue but only when the “popout” option to have the Extension in its own window. The “solution” for me was simply to go to “manage extension” and enable de “allow access to file URLs” then BAM - it started working
Bitwarden Extension version: 2025.10.2
Microsoft Edge version: 142.0.3595.53
Thank you for this solution. ![]()
Was having trouble adding passkeys for days now on my desktop, win11, Edge. Bitwarden extention was showing the grey box with turning cursor forever.
Your ‘allow access to file URLs’ solution did the trick.
“Allow access to file URLs” causes the extension to reload; same as disabling it & re-enabling it. In the short term, it worked just the same as disable/enable the extension. Curious to see if it works in the long run as a permanent fix so it stops happening though.
