Bitwarden won't start after every restart with Windows 11

Hey together,

im facing an unusual error on one of my colleagues windows clients.

After every reboot Bitwarden crashes with following message:

Translates to:
“The code execution cannot proceed because ffmpeg.dll was not found. Reinstalling the program may fix this problem.”

Does anyone know a fix?
I already reinstalled bitwarden twice and it worked fine until the next restart.

Best regards

Hello and welcome to the community,

I don’t know how to fix it, but I’d suggest the following steps to gather data how the file disappears:

  1. While running the BW desktop, see if the file is there
  2. After exiting the BW desktop, ensuring BW processes have all exited via Task Manager, see if the file is there.
  3. After rebooting, assuming your colleague doesn’t set the BW desktop up to start automatically, see if the file is there.
  4. When the file disappears
  • check if the AV solution, such as Windows defender, quarantines the file
  • check Windows event log to see if anything unusual happens.
  • check Bitwarden log (\user*\AppData\Roaming\Bitwarden\app.log) to see if anything unusual happens

It seems something deletes the file, but unless you are running a portable version, the process that deletes it has to have admin privilege. But what process?

Thank you for your reply, we narrowed it down to the autostart.
If BW gets started manually it works just fine…
