Is there a known issue with the Bitwarden web vault appearing totally empty on login?
I have seem posts on here about items appearing empty, but for me the vault is appearing as if I’ve just created an entirely new account.
This has happened to me several times (resolving spontaneously), and I’ve also been made aware of it happpening to others. For example, someone I work with has come to me in a panic about it.
Even though I’m now aware that “it happens”, it’s still quite alarming each time and this makes it difficult for me to continue to recommend this product to others… especially people who are getting used to the concept of using, trusting, and relying on a password manager.
Is this something that needs to be raised as an issue on GitHub, etc.?
Hi @curious_user, welcome to Community and thanks for reporting your experience! The next time this comes up, I would recommend reaching out to our support team so we can investigate.
Thanks. The issue is still ocurring. I’m getting a “failed to fetch” error message as well. I’ve contacted support, but wanted to update this thread in case it helps others.
Similar problem with Brave extension and Edge extension. I tried switching off the Edge extension and switching it on again. That did not fix the issue.
Logging into the website showed the database still existed. I removed the extension from Brave and reinstalled and was able to use the extension. Ditto Edge.
I just got the empty vault problem. I have a Chrome Thinkpad and an ASUS Windows 11. What happened on the Thinkpad was that the login was taking much longer than it usually does and I looked closely at the login box and there was a new line at the bottom of the login box: “ logging in through %2” (I think that was it???) and when the login completed the screen wasn’t showing my vault. It was as if I had never created one. I think this happened on January 3rd, which was four days ago. Two days later the vault reappeared but it’s gone again today, January 7th. I cleared the Thinkpad cache and tried to log in again. It made me do two Captcha “no I’m not a bot” screens before it let me enter my master password to get in and, still, no vault, and I guess that was a mistake because I just got an email from Bitwarden asking why I am using a brand-new login from a Chrome device. Luckily for me I do have that Windows 11 laptop and when I logged in there my vault appeared. So I exported it to a JSON file and it’s backed up to the cloud now.
I use a wifi connection that occasionally drops out and I first suspected that maybe some file was corrupted during transmission, which was why I cleared the cache. I haven’t done anything else and I’m going to contact support now but I wanted the community to have a record of how my vault disappeared.
I have just got the same error, my vault shows as empty on my laptop but not on my phone. I added a new Login on the laptop and it appeared on the phone but the laptop vault remains blank. This is concerning seeing as we use it for business purposes. Is there any news or updates about this? Any threads on Reddit or otherwise? Looking at other password managers as a result. The logistics of giving everyone access on their phones is not feasible.
The standard, Log Out option in the browser. This is a common problem, I’m searching to see if there’s a solution. If this is new to you, please read the other comments as I have tried all of the solutions I could find online, such as clearing cache, etc etc etc.
First of all, are you talking about the Web Vault (logging in to vault.bitwarden.com in a regular browser tab), or the Bitwarden browser extension?
Assuming you are referring to the browser extension, which version of the extension do you have installed? Find the version by clicking on the Settings () icon in the bottom right corner of the browser extension window, scrolling down to the “Other” section, and clicking the About link.
If you have the current version (2024.1.0), then click on the profile icon (a colored circle with your initials) in the top right corner of the browser extension (Arrow #1 in the screen shot below), and click Log out (Arrow #1 in the screen shot below):
Just logged jnto the normal browser and directly onto the website. Phone app and computer program have zero issue, it’s just when we log in via the website. As stated above, if I Add New logins, using the browser, they appear on the phone and program but still the website browser vault remains empty. Even the new addition doesn’t appear there.
Could you please provide some details? Which operating system (including version) are you using, and which browser (including version) are you using? Is your Bitwarden account hosted on vault.bitwarden.com, vault.bitwarden.eu, or on your own server?
Furthermore, please confirm that you are logging out by first clicking on your profile icon (#1 in the screen shot below) and then selecting “Log out” (#2 in the screen shot below) as shown below:
After logging out as shown above, clear your browser cache, shut down the browser, restart the computer, and then restart the browser. Is the Web Vault still empty when you log in again?
Update: Customer Support said the %2 was a visual bug (?) and that I should delete the browser tab. This actually helped when my Windows laptop started showing the same error. I imported the backup vault into the Bitwarden on my Thinkpad and everything was great until the error showed up again on the Thinkpad. This time I deleted the browser tab immediately and got the vault back again when I logged in.
I guess it took about a week for tech support to fix whatever happened because after that last time I haven’t seen the error. Bottom line, I’m going to try to remember to back up more.
