I am using Safari browser Version 26.2 (21623.1.14.11.9) on a MacBook Air M2 running macOS Tahoe 26.2. I disabled the Safari extension for Bitwarden Password Manager and cleared the storage and now the Safari extension cannot be enabled again. The Safari extension does not show in the browser though it is enabled in settings. I updated to the most current version of Bitwarden Password Manager Version 2026.1.0 (55383), which did not resolve the issue. How can I resolve this issue? Thank you.
Per this page, " Apple, Safari limits web extension use to only those obtained through Mac App Store downloads"
At least for me, 2026.1.0 is not yet available through the apple store. Did you by chance try to install it from Github?
I haven’t tried Github. I downloaded the Bitwarden Password Manager 2026.1.0 using the Check for updates… feature in the app. The Safari extension for Bitwarden Password Manager is embedded in the app and can’t be installed or uninstalled separately (stand-alone) from the app.
@denbesten I looked at the “this page” link you provided and noted, “Due to changes by Apple, Safari limits web extension use to only those obtained through Mac App Store downloads. As of the 2021-03-11 Release, users will not be able to use a Bitwarden Safari extension obtained through a .dmg installation from bitwarden.com/download or any other non-App Store source.”
That renders the updates via Bitwarden app useless and update prompts become nagware. I uninstalled 2026.1.0 and downloaded Bitwarden Password Manager from the Apple Store, reverting back to 2025.12.0, which is the latest build in the Apple Store. Reverting back did not resolve the Bitwarden Password Manager Safari extension problem and it doesn’t appear to have caused a problem for the Google Chrome extension. I guess I can simply discontinue using Safari and use Chrome instead. The Safari extension has been a problem with recent macOS updates. Thanks for pointing me to “this page.”
To clarify, are you saying that you still cannot enable version 2025.12.0 of the Safari browser extension, even though you downloaded this version from the Apple Store?
You are correct. I still cannot enable version 2025.12.0 of the Safari browser extension, even though I downloaded this version from the Apple Store. Note the browser extension is embedded in the Bitwarden Password Manager.
@jcubed59 Sounds like this recent “bug report” – maybe check whether this comment there would also be a solution for you.
I have only one instance of Bitwarden installed on my computer.
