Until a few weeks ago I could without problems log on to the OneNote android app. I know that, because the OneNote android app logged me out quite often (I hear that is not an unknown problem, but not relevant here).
But from one day to another I can no longer use my Bitwarden passkey stored on the same device to log in to Microsoft OneNote.
I get a “Sign in another way” / “We couldn’t sign in with your passkey. Please try again” / “Use your face, fingerprint, PIN, or security key” / “Use your password”.
If I then log in to the OneNote app via the passkey stored in ‘Google Password Manager’ it works just fine (like it used to work with the Bitwarden passkey).
When I log in via the Firefox browser on the same device (to both https://onenote.com and https://microsoft.com (in incognito windows with stop/start of the browser between both attempts), I can just fine log in with my passkey in Bitwarden.
I have also tried to log on to the Word-app on the same phone - same result. It works fine with the passkey in ‘Google password manager’, but fails with the above error when I use the passkey stored in Bitwarden.
To try with another app I tried the same with the LinkedIn app. When I during the login to the app choose the Linkedin passkey stored in Bitwarden I just return to to login page, but when I use the LinkedIn passkey stored in the ‘Google password manager’ it works fine.
And it doesn’t make any difference if I in the Android settings in ‘Passwords, passkeys and accounts’ disable ‘Google under ‘Addition services’ (with Bitwarden still active in the same section) - it still fails.
I have a Pixel 7a fully up to date (including all installed apps), and I have just now re-installed the Bitwarden app - but the result is the same.
Since it used to work and since the problem started from one day to another (and the problem never disappeared again), and that I have the problem with to different apps (Microsoft apps and LinkedIn (Yes, I know LinkedIn is owned by Microsoft, but still different companies) plus that I just fine can log in to onenote.com and microsoft via the browser with the Bitwarden passkey I think it must be a ‘general error’, not just a ‘microsoft related’ error.
Hope anybody ‘knows something’ about this - fingers crossed
I would like to emphasize the following : I think the problem is with all Andorid apps (at least for me) - I just don’t have that many andorid apps with a registered passkey. So when I mention microsoft apps and LinkedIn that’s because I have those installed and configured with a passkey both in Google Password Manager and a passkey in Bitwarden.
Noticed the same problem here, with the 2026.1 Android App. Had one app (a banking app) stopped responding to the passkey, and not the passkey itself because the key works with the desktop Firefox extension. I tried recreating that key and I keep getting “An error has occured”. Another app (AliExpress) just flat out refused to create the key. Both throws the error after selecting the item in BitWarden to save the key to.
@flatalk I changed the title to something more general, as this seems to be a new and more general issue at the moment. (with Android app version 2026.1.0)
@ToniCipriani I now also moved your posts into this thread.
I also added a “staff notice” (though I’m not a Bitwarden employee! – it’s just what it’s called) to the first post with the relevant GitHub bug report links. What you can do: add your details there if you experience those issue.
(explanation: it’s always good to know of these issues here on the Community Forum, but Bitwarden itself tracks bugs on GitHub!)
I will uninstall the current installed Bitwarden password manager 2026.1.0, download the com.x8bit.bitwarden.apk 2025.12.1 from github, and use that one until the problem is resolved.
And a new status: Today I upgraded (downloaded from Github) to “Password Manager 2026.1.1 (21176)”, and everything works for me again (=OneDrive app passkey login, LinkedIn app passkey login) - and login to https://onedrive.com also (… still; this worked all the time / with all versions of Bitwarden) via the mobile Firefox browser also works fine.
I have also updated this info in the relevant Github PR ( [PM-31493] Failed to create a new passkey for MyJCB Android app · Issue #6454 · bitwarden/android · GitHub )
