Hi I am signing up to bitwarden in an effort to simplify password sharing between myself and two partners. I am pretty confused and am hoping to get a bit of clarification, there are many types of accounts, free, premium, family, business… I currently signed myself up for a premium account that is 10$/yr, I also see option for monthly fees per user, then there’s also vaults and inviting other members.
I would like to have the ability to create a shared password (vault, i think) list, with my business partners, so that we all have access to our various accounts. Does everyone need to create a new 10$/yr account, and I invite them to the shared vault. Do I need to create a family plan, or business plan, in which case do we all share the same login credentials?
My use case would be as mentioned just to share passwords, I don’t think I need any other special features. I would appreciate if someone can kind me towards the right account, and how to set it up with my partners. Thank you!
For sharing synced passwords, Bitwarden uses a mechanism called “Collection” that each user can be set to have different privileges. Collections belong to an Org instead of an individual vault. With two other accounts, you want to set up either a “Family” org, which is cheaper but has fewer features, or you can set up a Teams or Enterprise business plans.
You can create an org through the web vault. This link is how to set up a family org:
You each will have your own credential, but with access to the shared collections, with different privileges.
The features that business plans have, but family plan doesn’t include:
For this use-case, and only three individuals sharing information, the most cost-effective solution would be to sign-up for a Family plan. With the Family plan, your individual Premium subscription will be superfluous (because the Family plan already provides Premium privileges for all plan members); thus, you should contact Bitwarden Customer Support and ask for a refund of your Premium subscription, or for your Premium subscription payment to be credited towards a Family plan subscription.
Your partners should create Free Bitwarden accounts. After you create the Family organization and invite them to become organization members, all three of you will have Premium privileges for your individual vaults, as well as for the shared organization vault. The individual vaults will always be private, and accessible only to the person who owns the corresponding Bitwarden account; in contrast, for items stored in the organization vault, you will be able to configure to accessibility of vault items, deciding which each organization members will be able to view, edit, or manage each item.
