Hi, is there any plan, to add automatic update of existing login items with new websites.
Let’s say, when I’m trying to login, and Bitwarden browser extension does not suggest anything. I can choose, what credentials to use, by opening an extension, an press autofill for chosen credentials.
After this, Bitwarden asks me, if I want to save it as a new credentials.
There would be cool, if that dialog would give a choice: to save as new credentials, or to update used login entry with new website entry.
This would help not to duplicate same credentials, if same portal have different domains, or just raw IPs - for sure used by self hosting community.
I’m a bit confused about your title and whole post – and this first sentence also (as your title mentions “automatic updates of passwords”, while your text also mentions adding new credentials…). So, I guess you mean both: updating existing login items and adding new login items, right?
If I understand you correctly here, then such a mechanism already exists in Bitwarden. Just enable those two options in Settings → Notifications:
Ask to add login
Ask to update existing login
Hmmm, I’m not sure. The safest thing to avoid duplicates is to add new login items manually and deactivate those two settings I just mentioned above. (that’s the “pro tip” , that’s usually recommended here – also because those notifications are never a 100% reliable, as there always can be a website that doesn’t fit in the scheme…)
Yes, sorry for the confusion - I’ve meant to update an existing login items. But not just updating, like that checkbox in “Notification”, which, I guess, updates passwords, but updating with “adding” current website to list of websites, for that “login item” that was used for this new website.
And I was thinking about it, as a choice in that modal that pops up - either to “add a new login item” to “update that uses one” - by adding that website to the list.
You can already add the website/URL: in the browser extension, in the main Vault view, scroll down to “All items” and search for the item that you want to autofill on the current site and add that URL to it… click on the three-dot-menu of that login item on the right and choose “Autofill”. → Autosave From Browser Extensions | Bitwarden
But I do scratch my head about a complete automatism here… if I had 500 login items, and I’m on a certain site where I want to add the URL to one specific item… how should Bitwarden know which one of the 500 login items I could possibly mean when it is not associated yet with that site? – Bitwarden would have to present me all 500 login items then to choose from?? – I’m not sure how that could work at all…
Here, Bitwarden should have remember, which login item was used to autofill credentials on a website - so it could suggest to modify that item with new url.
For this one, I think, that would be very close, but I don’t see such an option:
An this one, is actually, what can help me
Just now, this option is called “Fill and save”, as “Autofill” just fills up credentials into website, and not add that new website to that login item
Hm, and as your feature request is about some things that are already there in Bitwarden, for now I’m going to close this request.
I would recommend to try those things just mentioned out for a bit – and if you see the need, please open a new feature request. But one word of advice: feature requests here should be about (more or less) one specific thing only. Otherwise it’s impossible to count votes (and how should one vote, if there are other additional aspects of a mulit-faceted feature request, that one doesn’t want?).
PS: One word to the “notifications” – there was a recent bug around those “Update existing login” and “Save (new) login” notifications, which is only resolved with the new browser extension version 2025.12.0. Keep that in mind, when you try things out with an older extension version…
