Allow Universal Clipboard to work with Bitwarden between MacOS/iOS devices

When I copy a “field” in the Bitwarden iOS app, I should be able to paste the copied text on my macOS device (using the Shared Clipboard feature that is built into iCloud). However, I currently cannot use the shared clipboard feature.

Can support for ‘Shared Clipboard’ be added to Bitwarden?

I understand that some people are wary about data being stored in their clipboard. As such, if this feature was introduced into Bitwarden, it should probably be ON/OFF toggle switch, within the Bitwarden settings.

@anengelsen Welcome to the forum!

What is your clipboard timeout setting in the Bitwarden settings? Perhaps the clipboard is cleared faster than you are pasting?

Hello,
from what I read on Reddit, this is a choice from the dev team, not to allow universal clipboard to work with Bitwarden. I understand the security risks that exist with this feature, but I still would love to have the choice to toggle a checkbox to enable it or not.

Bumping this old thread. With the most recent version of Bitwarden and Authenticator on iOS, when I copy things on my iPhone 15 Pro Max from either app I cannot paste them on my MacBook Air. It doesn’t seem like either app is copying to the iCloud shared clipboard like other apps do.

This is such a bizarre restriction. Does someone actually think it’s better if people type in the TOTP or other details from their other device?

Make it a toggle for those who want to actually restrict it.

@anengelsen @Lia @Avamander I merged your posts with this feature request to the same topic.

While I appreciate the merge, it’s not exactly what I was asking. The main password manager application already supports iCloud clipboard. It’s Authenticator that is missing the functionality and therefore a feature request needs to exist for it.

Ah, so this feature request could be closed??

It already does exist. In the “authenticator” category: Copy Codes with Universal Clipboard (Apple)

PS: This feature request - and the feature request I merged - are/were both in the “password manager” category.

Edit: To note, I originally posted about this before the Authenticator section of the forums existed for what it’s worth, sorry if we’re hashing this out in the wrong category - it’s just simply been that long.

Before we close anything, let’s be crystal clear in our shared understanding of the issue and the request. I am just going to explain this very plainly to avoid confusion.

Two distinct iOS applications exist that we are speaking of:

  1. Bitwarden Password Manager
  2. Bitwarden Authenticator

Request: Enable Universal Clipboard support in the Bitwarden Authenticator iOS app. Bitwarden Password Manager for iOS already supports this functionality.

In #1, you can go to Settings → Other and enable Allow Universal Clipboard. This allows copying from the main app, Bitwarden Password Manager. You can copy and paste between iOS devices after this is set i.e. from iPhone to a Mac. I tested this exact scenario right now and it works. Nothing else is needed for this specific app.

In #2, this setting does not appear to exist nor does it function as if the requested feature existed. When you open Bitwarden Authenticator and copy a verification code, it is not copied to the Universal Clipboard and not accessible on other iOS devices i.e. a code copied on an iPhone cannot be pasted into a field on a Mac. This app is what needs to be updated with Universal Clipboard functionality.

Let me know if you need more screenshots. I cannot post more than one unfortunately due to restrictions here.

No problem. And yes, I’m aware, that the authenticator category is not that old.

Perfect. Thanks for your detailed answer! As I personally don’t have any Apple products in use, it’s good to know that it works on iOS (for the BW password manager app). And thanks for sharing, how it can be activated.

If you use a Mac also I might have a “request” to you: if you can test it, it would be interesting to know, if the BW browser extensions and desktop app also (already?) can use the “Universal Clipboard”? → then we could “narrow down” this feature request, that is about the “password manager apps”.

Thanks again. - As written before, this discussion should be continued in the corresponding feature request: Copy Codes with Universal Clipboard (Apple)

Thanks. For #1 and #2, I think we sorted it out. As written above, if you (or anyone else) can contribute something to the question, whether the BW desktop app and browser extension can make use of the “Universal Clipboard” on MacOS - I would be glad to hear about that.

BTW, most forum restrictions you experience now, do get lifted, when you spend some more time around on the forum – I think usually it’s about 30 min. reading time in total, so only about 18 min. to go. (PS: and when you reach the next forum “trust level”, you’ll be able to vote for feature requests)

I don’t understand the lack of clarity. There are two apps and two FRs, one for each.

  1. This FR predates the release of Authenticator by 11 months and is tagged Password Manager. Therefore, it seems clear to me that this refers to Password Manager, despite some minor detours into Authenticator territory. Since Universal Clipboard has been implemented in Password Manager, this FR should be closed, freeing up the votes so they can be used elsewhere.

  2. The second feature request (Copy Codes with Universal Clipboard (Apple)) is tagged Authenticator, clearly mentions Authenticator in the initial post and was opened ~2 months after Authenticator’s release. That one should remain open and if anyone wants it, go vote for it! (after having read for~30 minutes to improve their trust level from new-user to basic-user).

I see the same universal clipboard setting on my iPhone that @lia mentione. Therefore I am closing this topic as implemented. If @Lia or @Avamander would like the comments moved to the 2nd topic, PM either @Nail1684 or myself and we can move them for you.

Looks to me like Authenticator, its FR category, and its Ask the community, all share a common birthday, May 1, 2024, about 15 months young. So, yes, all three are still in diapers.

So it’s also implemented in the browser extension, desktop app and the web vault? (and not only the iOS app) → this FR is tagged as “app:all” and also has “MacOS” in the title, so it doesn’t request to use the Universal Clipboard only on iOS/the mobile app

As long as that isn’t “cleared up”, this FR should stay open. (unfortunately I don’t have any MacOS devices to test it myself)
