Current Problem: Currently, when copying credentials from Bitwarden, the application passes the ExcludeFromClipboardHistory flag to the Windows API. This prevents the entry from appearing in the history stack, even as the “most recent” item. Ctrl-C copies one and only one parameter. The Win+V will show (example) both password and username if they are copied to clipboard before win+V.
For users dealing with legacy apps or complex forms where auto-fill is unavailable, this prevents a “stacking” workflow. A user cannot copy a Username and then a Password and paste them sequentially using Win+V. Instead, they must switch back and forth between Bitwarden and the target app multiple times. Proposed Solution: Add a toggle under Settings > Security titled: “Allow entries in Windows Clipboard History.”
When OFF (Default): Maintain current behavior (exclude from history).
When ON: Remove the exclusion flag when copying, allowing the local Windows buffer to retain the entry.
Why this is useful: This significantly reduces friction for Windows power users. Other managers like KeePass already offer this choice, allowing users to decide their own balance between security and productivity. The feature would still respect Bitwarden’s internal “Clear Clipboard” timer for the primary clipboard entry. (note: Gemini AI assisted in content suggestion for post)
that’s not the need. need is native fill on applications running on windows. were you able to replicate? (example copy a pass then a login-username for an account. Open notepad to test and win+V and see what items are there to paste (if it was an actual app). This worked last week but over weekend it stopped.
Using the web extension or the windows native BW app, many multiple key presses are necessary to select the vault entry, open the full page for the entry unhide the pass (eye icon), highlight entire username and then drag. ditto for password. not sure how this is better? no fill offered to separate windows app like ‘fill on window “x”’ Am I missing something?
Bitwarden calls this “auto-type”, and it is a feature currently in active development, as shown in the official Roadmap:
What version are you using? I don’t see any recent pull requests or release notes suggesting this was an intentional change in behavior in 2026.1.1, so it could be a bug. Nonetheless, my impression is that Bitwarden (and its users) prefer to exclude vault data from the system clipboard history:
That is not how you use drag-and-drop. The password does not have to be visible, and you do not need to highlight any text. This is demonstrated in the animation from the link I had posted above.
You just need one key-press to view the item details, then position the mouse pointer on the label of the “Username” or “Password” field, and drag-and-drop.
