All of a sudden... "extension may have been corrupted"

Edge has disabled the BW extension…
Repair link didn’t work and I couldn’t re-enable the extension.
I uninstalled and reinstalled which worked, but what caused that? Was there a malicious attempt to hack Bitwarden extension? (I never had that problem with LastPass)

Hello Hugh, and welcome to the community!

The problem you described is rare and will most likely induce few responses. If you Google-search with the string “Edge This extension may have been corrupted,” you can see that the posters didn’t come to any good conclusion, including in BW, which the issues was closed without any resolution:

You’ll also see that this happened to users of 1Password and Lastpass, with the 1Password user deploying the compatible Chrome extension.

You may be able to use some of these alternatives:

  1. Just hope that it doesn’t happen again
  2. Put your computer into safe mode and full-scan with Windows Defender, and repeat with MalwareByte
  3. Contact customer service to see if they have any other suggestions

I ran a CRC and it turns out they do not match, further, I ran a diff check on the repaired extension, which shows that the corrupted extension no longer contains the computed_hashes.json files. This is indeed very suspicious.

Same happened to me, I can only assume we have been targeted and our extension has suffered an attack to get our passwords.

Happened to me recently. Searching for it on the web is not promising…

Me too, I’m a 1Password user who has seen this type of corrupted extensions in Chrome and Edge, but never in FireFox. It’s happened twice over the course of a few months.

Are there any other unique extensions that you happen to use in your browsers? Anything potentially “non-standard”? I work as an IT Admin, and I’m wondering if there are any common denominators in our setups that will help us track down the source of the issue.

Change your browser language to english to make it work, untill they fix it.
