I would also welcome this feature. I use a very primitive folder structure (just “Personal” and “Work”) and almost all items go into “Personal”.
Thus, I’d like “Personal” to be selected as the default folder when creating a new item.
But obviously I would still like to be able to change it to a different folder before saving. This is just about the default selection.
One can also adapt one’s workflow and consider the No folder folder to be whatever the default folder should be named. In our case, we consider No folder to be the ‘active’ items, and have the archived items (archiving is typically an exceptional manual action) in the archive folder. When we want to see only ‘active’ items, we select the no folder folder… Not nice, but it does the job
