A difference between two PCs

I have noticed a difference between two PCs when using BW. Both machines are roughly similar, OS is Windows 10 Pro with the same build number.
In my main machine I had a login item for the website that gives me data for my installation of a solar panel inverter and battery. It has stopped autofilling the Username and Password when I select the item. It opens the site but does not autofill the Username and Password.
As this is not what I expected I turned to my second machine and selected the login item in exactly the same way as on the main machine, it worked as expected and autofilled the Username and Password.
Now I have obviously got a difference in the setup between the two machines and I need advice on what to look for to correct it. It was working earlier today but not now, so what have I changed and where do I look for it.

I have just noticed that the option to select Bitwarden is not appearing on the main machine context menu when I click in a username area on other website entries. Could this be helpful in pointing me in the right direction?

Check the auto-fill settings on both machines. Those do not sync. Also check the version number to see if maybe one got an update and the other did not.

There was one difference in the auto-fill settings the main machine did not have the ‘show auto-fill menu on form fields’. I have set it to Off to match the second machine but this did not change the auto-filling status.

Another trick that works for some is to disable and then reenable the extension and if that does not do it, uninstall then reinstall.

Hello Allan, and welcome to the community!

Clicking on an item will give you a different result under different contexts. Clicking the icons on the item will also perform different things. For example, if you are not on the page that you want to autofill, you will get something like this:

If you click on the an entry’s text, it will show the details of the entry, but if you click on the circled icon, it will launch the page, auto-filling the page depending on whether or not “Auto-fill on page load” is set or not.

If you are on the page you can autofill, you will get something similar to this:

If you click on the entry’s text, it will autofill the text if it can.

From your description, it’s unclear which context you were in, where on the entry you clicked, etc.

The “easiest” way to autofill is possibly:

  1. Go to the page you want to autofill
  2. If it’s not autofilled already, hit the Shift-Ctrl-L to cycle through your credentials until you get the right one.
  3. If 2) doesn’t work, try clicking the icon and click on the entry (on the text) that you want to use.

@DenBesten
That fixed it, I re-downloaded the desktop BW and installed it and all problems have gone. I did note that the version of BW has changed the old one was 2023.9.3 the new one 2024.8.0. Is a new version notified to all users when it comes out or auto-update?

@Neuron5569 Thanks for the input. You went to great lengths to try to help. As you can see from my other reply un-install and re-install seems to have fixed it, but many thanks.

Reinstall worked for me in the more than 5 times BW browser extension started missbehaving.

@TheBestPessimist
I think I am catching up on you in the number of re-installs to keep BW in line.
I am now on number 3. I have no idea what I have done to deserve this but I will keep looking.

It is supposed to auto-update (and tell you it is doing so). However, that can fail if you:

  1. Are using self-hosting, in which case, the clients update only when you update your self-hosted vault.
  2. Set a local environment variable (something like “electron auto update”) to zero.
  3. You installed it system-wide and your account does not have system-wide write privileges.
  4. have a corporate managed PC and they have blocked the update-check URL.

I’m sorry you (we) have to go through this. I would like to know why this is happening and what is corrupting the browser extension too.

@TheBestPessimist I agree but does anyone read these comments. If not, what is the point of making them. It smells like LastPass!

@DenBesten Thanks for the info about updates.
As far as I know, and that is not much, about what you commented !
1 I am not self-hosting.
2 A local environment variable (not precise enough)
3 Installation system-wide, I installed the Bitwarden exe from the downloaded file
4 I do not have a corporate managed PC.
So that means it should not fail to auto-update!

To All.
I am now on my 5th re-install and am trying to eliminate conflicts with other apps I have installed like Ultrasearch by un-installing them and retrying a fresh install of BW.

Or that my knowledge is incomplete.

@DenBesten
You may have a valid point there, but I am not able to tell if your knowledge is incomplete. So far, the removal of Ultrasearch and re-install of BW seems to
work. US puts up a dialog which asks if you want to continue, report a bug, restart the app or cancel the app because it is frozen. It does not appear to be a scheduled event and I haven’t found out how to stop that happening, it seems to disturb BW though.
