Just to make things more concrete. The Tab view used to easily show up to 9 credit card or identity items — now it can only show four items total. Thus, users who have more than 4 items in the card/identity category now will always have to use the scroll bar before they can autofill:
In essence, this doubles the amount of work required to autofill card or identity data. This is an especially troublesome loss of functionality and efficiency, given the lack of a keyboard shortcut for autofilling cards and identities.
As noted in the GitHub issue posted by @Protechted above, the number of vault entries displayed when in Vault view or Search results has now been reduced by one-third, from 11 items to only 7 items. How is this an improvement?
I appreciate the modern look and mobile design elements for when I use the product on a mobile platform. Looks great! But my largest use case is on the desktop platform and there I prefer the more compact look & feel. Especially the part about respecting the use of vertical space. On the desktop, the mouse is the primary input and adding vertical space to compensate for an imprecise method of input is … in a word … insulting to desktop users.
I see that the feedback has been received and an option will likely be added for those that would prefer a more concise display of information. When it comes to UI changes, please remember who your audience is. Yes, mobile will eventually overtake all app development, but that isn’t today.
I have a self hosted Bitwarden instance. The firefox plugin shows the new design. And with it I can’t login anymore with my given credentials! I get the message, that they’re wrong, but they aren’t.
In Chromium I still see the old design - here I can login as usual.
(I additionally opened a bitwarden.com account today to check if the login works with the FF plugin there, and it does)
@wattaist - If you are running an older version of Bitwarden server or a knock-off server that is not distributed or supported by Bitwarden, the new clients will not work. You will have to upgrade to a more recent version of the server software distributed by Bitwarden.
I have no doubt there were requests for a UI update. I do, however, doubt that anyone was asking to see 33% less information at once. I’m pretty sure it can be made prettier without making the experience worse.
Please add a compact mode for desktop browsers at least. I already miss being able to see all my cards without scrolling.
I like the update, because what is a button and what is not is significantly more easy to discern than it was previously.
However, I believe that the vertical padding for entries might be worth being possible to configure in pixels, because occasionally when searching for something by scrolling in my vault rather than searching, I have noticed that the amount of information that is available has been reduced.
However, I do not want this improvement to be reverted.
My personal opinion is, I don’t really care that much how the Browser Extension looks since I rarely use it. My UID/Passwords are auto-filled and/or shortcut based. The only time I really use the extension window is for filling credit card or personal data. ̶B̶o̶t̶h̶ ̶o̶f̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶s̶e̶ ̶t̶h̶i̶n̶g̶s̶ ̶a̶r̶e̶ ̶r̶a̶r̶e̶l̶y̶ ̶n̶e̶e̶d̶e̶d̶.̶ I try not to keep more than one credit card on file because, why expose more than necessary on the web? And for notes, I usually use the desktop app.
The only thing that I find a bit odd is that the window can no longer be adjusted. But, it really does not matter that much to me. It just seems odd that the feature was removed.
EDIT: I am using the Opera Browser.
EDIT: ̶B̶o̶t̶h̶ ̶o̶f̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶s̶e̶ ̶t̶h̶i̶n̶g̶s̶ ̶a̶r̶e̶ ̶r̶a̶r̶e̶l̶y̶ ̶n̶e̶e̶d̶e̶d̶.̶ should be: Both of these things I rarely need.
No, no, no. Why change to UI to less function? Please don’t jump on this trend.
One browser showed up with this - found I had to scroll and scroll where I previously did not.
This is problematic because I have two touchscreen laptops and anything doing with touchscreens has inaccuracy built in - older touchscreens degrade. Half the time was spent scrolling off the extension drop down and recovering.
I think you meant to say “Both of these things are functions that I rarely need”. As a generalization about other users, your statement is demonstrably not valid.
I’m surprised to find out that I’m almost the only one here who likes the new UI. It looks much more modern and it’s change in size on full HD and 100% DPI is almost invisible for me. Anyway, keep improving it, but please do not make switching to the previous layout mandatory.
Are you talking about the browser extension? Since the window size did not change, it doesn’t matter what screen resolution you have, the number of items displayed is fewer.
I registered here to report an issue with my Firefox browser extension icon. Ever since the recent update the icon doesn’t turn gray when logged out (it remains blue at all times), and it’s not displaying any status icons such as the padlock when locked, or even the badge counter. It’s just the normal blue icon with nothing on it and it never changes appearance regardless of status.
This issue seems to be only limited to Firefox. Chrome and opera seem to work fine.
I, too, absolutely despise the new UI experience. As others have mentioned, the items are now almost double the size which makes finding items visually very difficult without scrolling. This reminds me of the very reason why I migrated away from Lastpass - they focused too heavily on making things “pretty”, and in doing so, reducing the usability of the app for people that are used to using an app a specific way, putting aesthetics over usability.
The new update is also very slow and laggy (for the Firefox extension). It takes about 5 seconds to switch between tabs and look for items, whereas the previous version takes <1s for searches, and tab switches are almost instantaneous. Now, I couldn’t even get to the password generator without waiting 5 seconds. Sometimes the interface feels so glitchy that I just want to throw a rock at it and find ways to revert back to the previous version since the experience is just horrid.
Edit: Actually found a way to revert on the Mozilla addons site - will do that until this whole mess is sorted out.
Signed up to also comment that the first thing I did after I saw the UI had been updated in the browser extension was to look for an option for a compact mode and was disappointed to see that there wasn’t one.
It isn’t so bad on the “Vault” tab, but on the “Tab” tab it has significant extra space that was not there before, and it isn’t really getting us anything better, it only seems to make the lines look like individual button with rounded corners instead of extending all the way to the edge. The icons remain the same and the text appears a similar size so we are not getting any enhanced readability.
On the “Generator” tab we are loosing even more ease of use, the options for changing the password parameters have all fallen below so that scrolling is required to change any of them, also the password now wraps around even sooner in the new UI than before.
And the “Settings” tab now just scrolls on for several screens. If you just wanted to improve readability and differentiate the different items, you could just have added a space several pixels wide between each row to show the darker background, but I don’t think this is necessary.
I would recommend just changing the UI back the way it was. In the mean time I have installed the old version of the extension and disabled auto updates until a fix or revert is made.
In order to make sure your issue doesn’t get lost, please either start a new thread or reach out to our support team directly at https://bitwarden.com/contact/
I don’t understand how something as vague as “visual updates” translates into such a bad, unnecessary change. Or why you feel you have to pay any attention to vague requests at all.
You basically rounded the corners and added margins. Now I have to scroll where before I didn’t need to.
I don’t see much of a visual change other than the noticeable of adding extra white space. My browser ext. hasn’t grabbed the update yet. Will need to stay disconnected from the internet until this can be tweeked.
