I’m trying to switch from 1password8 to bitwarden and nothing will import. I had a family account on 1password with 2 users. There is no single vault export I can find in 1password. Just export for the family account as 1pux. There are two 1p vaults - shared and private. When I import to bitwarden it says I can only have two collections. I asked support and they sent me to a link about conditioning a bitwarden file. I doubt this will work, but I went ahead and added Private and Shared collections and then hacked into the export json these collections and referenced them where it appeared they were needed on every item. No difference, same error. I removed the shared vault from the input json and it made no difference.
I know this is open source but the 1password instructions are laughable, the error message is useless because the json file does not have collections in it and nowhere can I find where it tells me what “becomes a collection” during 1password import.
I am not that familiar with 1Password (And the meaning of “vault” in 1PW), but I will do my best to help.
One suggestion I have would be to temporarily upgrade your Bitwarden account to a Family Plan, which allows an unlimited number of collections. Assuming that this allows you to import your .1PUX, you would then see what collections were created, and have an opportunity to re-organize the data to reduce the number of collections to 2 — you can then export the organization vault (and separately export the individual vaults of the organization members), and cancel your Family Plan subscription, after which you can contact Support to request a refund of the subscription fee. If necessary, use your Bitwarden vault exports to import into the final account structure.
You could also consider keeping the Family Plan subscription ($40/year), as this would provide Premium accounts to both you and your wife, and also allow any shared vault items to use premium features (e.g., file attachments or integrated TOTP).
