What type of autofill function is Bitwarden advertising in this animation at the top of the Downloads page?

The Fill button is visible, so the option “Click items in autofill suggestions to fill” has not been enabled — yet, autofilling occurs when the item icon is clicked.

Using the item icon as an autofill button is something I have campaigned for, but only as a substitute for the new Fill button (to minimize the reduced horizontal width in the new UI).

So, is this some new autofill functionality that is being teased? Is this how the UI for the new autotype function will work?

Clarifications or speculations welcome!

Interesting observation! But as there also is no number in the Bitwarden icon, I would tend to think it is a fictitious form of autofill, created by the marketing department.

Actually, autotype is not expected to change the badge counter, as it does not perform any kind of matching to validate input location, as explained in this UI notice:

Bitwarden does not validate input locations, be sure you are in the right window and field before using the shortcut.

So the animation is still consistent with a possible UI for autotype…

Hmm, isn’t autotype to be expected for the desktop apps? The animation does show the browser extension…

Not really - at least as long as the desktop app and browser extension don’t merge somehow.

I agree with @Nail1684 that this might be a fantasy graphic used to show how easy it is to autofill a login page. It somewhat corresponds to reality.

The desktop feature’s screenshot also says “shortcut,” which presumably will be a keyboard shortcut in line with offline password managers like KeePass and Password Safe. In those, you either 1) use a global shortcut key to fill in the upfront username/password fields using the locked/unlocked password manager, or 2) bring the login screen to the front, switch directly to the password manager, unlock it, and then use the app’s shortcut key. One can hope for an OS level autofill, but somehow, this doesn’t seem to be a trend in Windows.

Of course, these are all speculations. I hardly ever see Bitwarden’s ads or marketing materials except in videos that seem to show the real/prototype Bitwarden in action.

Hey y’all, don’t look too hard into it. This is a marketing graphic demonstrating what autofill is. It’s intended to be simplified so that it’s easy to understand the value at-a-glance, but you’re right that it’s not reflective of current mechanics. We’ll make that adjustment, thanks for bringing it to our attention!
