Vault Item Sharing

I’ve been wondering the same thing about it not appearing on the roadmap anymore.

I’ve recently been evaluating Proton Pass. This is a standard, and very useful, feature. It would essentially be “cross organization” vault or collection sharing.

It this was in the product it would make this tool much more useful across the vault/organization boundary.

For example, as an IT consultant, I have customers that I’d like to be able to share secrets with and not require them to have a separate account within my organization. They would only need their own Bitwarden account and could access this shared vault or collection with the identity they already have.

I can do that with Proton Pass today and am actually about to do this very thing there. But I sure wish this was available in Bitwarden…

Help make Bitwarden the “Go-To” Password Manager!

I would like to propose a feature that allows users to share login credentials (including both username, password, and 2FA codes) directly with one click from the vault, without needing to switch tabs or use Bitwarden’s separate “Send” feature. This feature would simplify the sharing process, especially for accounts protected by two-factor authentication (2FA).

Use Case:

Currently, sharing login credentials requires users to manually copy and paste them into a Send link, and separately manage the 2FA key. For teams or families working together, this process can be cumbersome, particularly when trying to share accounts with 2FA enabled.

I am suggesting a feature similar to what other password managers like 1Password offer, where:

  1. When a user clicks “Share” on a login, Bitwarden generates a link containing the login credentials.
  2. This link includes the dynamically regenerating 2FA code, so recipients don’t need to set up 2FA manually.
  3. The recipient sees both the login details and the automatically updating 2FA codes, providing full access to the account in one step.

This would reduce friction for users who need to share secure accounts quickly and efficiently.

Expected Behavior:

  • A “Share” button appears on each login entry in the vault.
  • Upon clicking “Share,” a link is generated that includes the login credentials and 2FA code.
  • The recipient of the link would be able to view the dynamically regenerating 2FA codes without needing to set up an authenticator.

Comparison with Other Tools: For reference, 1Password offers a similar feature that allows users to share both login credentials and 2FA codes seamlessly. This integration makes sharing secure credentials easy and efficient, especially for teams and collaborators.

There is already a similar request, which has 238 votes and is “roadmap planned” – which @go12 (a Bitwarden Employee) clarifies means “There is still work planned but the timetable is not set at this point”.

If you feel your request duplicates the other one, click the blue “Vote” button at the top of the other page and also reply here so that @grb can merge your comment into the existing request.

Is it possible to add a password sharing function to external users, similar to the direct sharing function of 1password? External users can see the account password and totp after opening the URL through the browser.

Doesn’t the Send Option that? Bitwarden Send - Secure File and Information Sharing | Bitwarden

I saw this feature, but it looks like he can’t share the otp verification code

@wu_cuke I merged your post (and several other related post) into this main feature request on the topic of vault item sharing. To support the request, established forum users can scroll to the top of the thread and click the Vote button.

No, Bitwarden Send is just a secure (encrypted) text message (or file transfer, if you have Premium). If you send a TOTP code, it will become invalid after 30 seconds.

Gotcha, thank you!

You can share the TOTP “key” (manually) - that does not expire. But you’d want to be very careful with that…

True, but I think that this feature request envisions a form of sharing in which the recipient gets the password and TOTP codes without being able to see/copy the TOTP authentication key (and in which the person sharing can simply indicate “share this vault item with that person”, without having to manually copy & paste usernames, passwords, and TOTP authentication keys into a Send).

…which is actually a secure method:

Assuming an adversary is able to observe numerous protocol exchanges and collect sequences of successful authentication values. This adversary, trying to build a function F to generate HOTP values based on his observations, will not have a significant advantage over a random guess.

Would it be too much to ask for a wrapper for Send that simply copies the content of the credential in a pre-defined format and sends it to the destination?

It could allow users to select which fields they want to include and come with some sane defaults.

Hi all.
Pretty much the title. I request for an option to directly share Card details using Send.
While viewing the Card details, there should be an option to copy relevant details (card number, cvv, expiry, etc…) directly into a new Send (text). User would just need to hit change options and hit Save. That’s it. It would result in a pretty quick and safe way to share Card details with anyone.

@iamMG Welcome to the forum!

I’ve merged your post into an existing feature request on a related topic.
