Username generator integration with Paced Email

Feature/Fix name:

Paced Email username generation integration

Feature/Fix Description

Paced Email is an email forwarder service (much like AnonAddy, Firefox Relay et al) which also provides privacy, security and productivity benefits. I propose the addition of email alias generation to the recently announced “anonymous username generator”

Clients / Repos Affected:

  • Clients

Timeline to completion (estimate):

A local proof of concept based on the AnonAddy implementation has been completed and I can upload a new branch to my fork here soon: GitHub - jemcode/clients: Bitwarden client applications (web, browser extension, desktop, and cli)

I aim to add some new settings functionality to the Paced Email platform itself so users can define which account/domain, etc., they want to use by default when generating new usernames. This will be completed in the coming days.

Thanks for the proposal!

Just to confirm, is the API active/accessible in your account? Just wanted to double check because I saw this on the Paced support page:

Access to your account data via API is coming soon.

Hey @dwbit ! Great question! Once I have released the new API and OAuth additions, I’ll write up some docs for general usage. I’m planning on opening up a Bitwarden specific API endpoint. In fact, it’s all done, but I just need to tie off a few bits and bobs before releasing it.

Here’s what the finished API page is going to look like:

I’m also deliberating whether to add configuration to the Paced Email dashboard UI or have an extra field or two in the Bitwarden extension UI (like AnonAddy). I’m leaning towards keeping Bitwarden clean and adding the settings/defaults on my side…

Thanks for the info! What’s the story behind Paced email and how long have you been working on it? How many users does it currently support?

Hey @dwbit! You’re welcome!

Paced Email was launched about 3 years ago and has progressed from being primarily a productivity tool to one that is now trusted by its significant user base for email security, anonymity and privacy too.

It has also spawned a more Firefox Relay-type product called Vend Email too. Vend is built from the ground up with the ability for users to easily transfer or even sell their secure email forwarders. This project is newer but is beginning to gather steam.

Hey @dwbit! It’s been a while but I’ve finally got all my ducks in a row and created a pull request for the Paced Email integration: Add Paced Email forwarder generator by rikkipitt · Pull Request #3326 · bitwarden/clients · GitHub

What are the next steps? It looks like I need a reviewer.

Thanks @rikkipitt, the team will review and get back to you shortly :+1:t2:

Hey @rikkipitt just following up that the team was reviewing and couldn’t locate an open source repo, so the pull request got closed for now, let us know if you have any other information.
