Today, my windows desktop app updated to 2025.5.0 and things seem a bit better, but not perfect.
On these browsers, The windows security dialog does not pop-to-front, but it now behaves with Hello+Face.
- Chrome 136.0.7103.114 (Official Build) (64-bit) 2025.5.1
- Edge 134.0.3124.68 (Official build) (64-bit) 2025.5.1
- Firefox 139.0.1 (64-bit) Bitwarden 2025.5.0
On this browser, The windows security dialog is displayed front-and center and I can use Hello+PIN, but Hello+Face continues to say “Something went wrong. Please try again.”.
- Opera 119.0.5497.70 Bitwarden 2025.5.1
All on Windows 24H2 (OS Build 26100.3775), Bitwarden Desktop 2025.5.0
Seems like we are half-way there. I’ll take what I can get and hope that it sticks. Also, hoping that others can replicate the improved behavior.
I didn’t follow it that thoroughly, but there are at least those two relevant PRs here (which also contain some discussion about the possible causes):
I’m also facing this problem since the Windows Security pop up didn’t show on top
The only workaround for me with Windows Hello Face is by:
- Covering my face when clicking “unlock with biometric” so the scan will fail
- Click on the Windows Hello pop up icon in task bar
- When it shows “no face detected…,” clik More Choice and select face. Uncover your face and it will scan again and the Bitwarden will unlocked
You can also click the Windows Hello quickly so you don’t have to do the step 3.
This happens when the Windows Hello dialog pops up in the background, which seems to be the actual bug. If Hello recognizes you while it’s in the background, it fails. If you click on it to bring it to the foreground before it finishes its recognition, it works. That’s the reason PIN works, because there’s no way to input the PIN without the pop up being in the foreground.
My situation is characterized by the Bitwarden unlock on biometrics working nicely for months after I acquired a suitable camera that Windows Hello will accept.
Of late, it has stopped working. The workaround contained in the last response indeed works for me. However, I can not live with it for much longer as my non-technical users can not cope with the steps it requires.
Is there hope for a complete fix to address both the pop-under menu and correct operation with Windows Hello ?
Win 11 Pro 24H2 with current cumulative updates (build 26100.4946). Bitwarden 2025.7.0
We’re aiming to release some improvements next week, stay tuned!
You’re right, just tried it, failed a first time but If I block the camera, click on the pop up then unblock the camera it works. Well, I’ll just use the PIN until that’s fixed by whoever needs to fix that
I can confirm this
