Unable to login to Google Account using Yubikey - Bitwarden "passkey" screen keeps popping up

I’m using Bitwarden on desktop within the Brave browser.

When I try to login to my Google account and select “USB key” as my 2FA method, Bitwarden opens the passkey window instead of allowing me to use my Yubikey for validation. Within this Bitwarden passkey pop-up, there is no other option besides “Close”, which then ruins the 2FA validation attempt in Google.

I’ve been working around this issue for quite some time using temporary Google verification codes but I’d rather find how to resolve it. I’ve searched around the forums and I’ve seen various spins on this issue but none that solve my particular problem. I’ve combed the Autofill settings to somehow turn off passkeys altogether or just for Google, but I find no option to do so.

Any suggestions?

There used to be additional options on that pop-up (“Use your device or hardware key”), and I’m not certain whether the removal of this option was deliberate or a code regression.

One thing that you can try is to go to Settings > Notifications > Excluded Domains in the browser extension, and add the domain accounts.google.com (or whatever the FQDN is for the login page where you are trying to use the Yubikey). I hope that this helps.

You could do that by un-checking “Ask to save and use passkeys” in Settings → Notifications.

Could you make a screenshot of this pop-up (with personal information redacted)?

And I’m not certain it was removed, as I still see it.

My memory may be imperfect, but I thought that at some point, the option to use a hardware key was also presented on the browser extension unlock screen (which pops up when the relying party requests passkey authorization). The hardware key option is definitely not present on the unlock pop-up in 2025.10.0.

On the other hand, OP seems to be talking about the passkey selection screen (where I do still see the “Use your device or hardware key” link).

@gearbucket1 Could you please post a screenshot (with personal info redacted) showing the Bitwarden passkey pop-up that you are seeing. In addition, please confirm which version of the browser extension that you have installed.

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions! Firstly, when coming back to this thread I realized I had shared that I was using the Brave browser when encountering these issues. I was incorrect: I use several browsers and my browser for Google is Mullvad….which after troubleshooting further today based upon your suggestions, I found that it’s likely specifically the Mullvad browser that creates these issues since it’s probably blocking a lot of the validation chatter necessary to make this work. I went back to Mullvad browser to take a screen capture of the Passkey pop-up and this time I couldn’t even get that far since Google kept “clocking” continuously after I selected 2FA hardware key.

Then, I went into Brave and opened a Private tab and tried it there and IT WORKED! This time, I saw the option on that pop-up to select Hardware Key for validation. Per your suggestion(s), I added accounts.google.com to the Excluded Domains and additionally unchecked the Passkey notification. This removed that Passkey pop-up altogether.

Long story short, PEBCAK. Thanks again for the help!

You don’t need to do both — just one or the other, depending on what you’re trying to accomplish. If you never want to use any passkeys stored in Bitwarden, then unchecking the option “Ask to save and use passkeys” is sufficient (and you do not need to add the domain the the exclusion list). On the other hand, if you want to store some passkeys in Bitwarden, but use your Yubikey for Google (and perhaps some other accounts), then you should add the corresponding domains to the “Excluded Domains” list (but keep the option “Ask to save and use passkeys” enabled).

In any case, glad to hear that your issue is solved.

Yup - understood. I don’t use passkeys for anything.
