Saving a Generated Password Creates a New Vault Entry

Hello,

I am a little bit confused about the process of updating a password on any website. Let’s assume that I filled out the old password with the existing vault entry. After that, the option to generate a password appears:

After that, the browser extension offers to store the new password:

The next step is confusing since it creates a completely new vault entry (note the missing username, item name has been changed by me):

My expectation would be that the existing vault entry is updated. What am I doing wrong?

I think that Bitwarden requires the username to identify whether a password save prompt should result in an update or a new login. But I also recall that there has been some discussion about possible buggy behavior. Let me dig a little…

Update:

This bug report is what I was thinking of (seems related, but I’m not sure if it is 100% matching your concern):

There is also a related feature request:

Hm… aditionally to what @grb just wrote: I guess an “Update existing login” button in the inline autofill menu/generator (besides the “Save login” function) would come in handy here…

I’d also have to search for it, but I think there might not be an explicit feature request about that yet.

PS: Clicking such an “Update existing login” button could open some possible matches / suggestions including a search field…

There is such a button:

Oh, is that the inline autofill menu/generator? :winking_face_with_tongue:

I think @marlin was primarily talking about using the inline autofill generator for changing a password. – But I think, one (current) solution could be to use the inline autofill generator, but not to use the “Save to Bitwarden” button (as that would create a new login item as @marlin pointed out), but to submit the password change form and hope the autosave prompt intercepts the change. (and that would be the “Update existing login” prompt that @grb mentioned)

Okay, that’s interesting. What can I do so that the button appears? Searching for bitwarden “update existing login” just reveals a lot of questions from the short period when this was offered after every login. :see_no_evil_monkey:

The page I was showing above is Patreon by the way. No matter where I click in which order, I do not get the “Update existing login” offer.

I wasn’t paying attention to the context of your original post — the button I mentioned appears when you enable the prompts that ask if you want to update passwords, but it would be shown in a pop-up at the top of the browser, not in the inline autofill menu. To enable, check the box for the option “Ask to update existing login”, under Settings > Notifications.

Thanks a lot, that helped. After enabling that option, the exact same workflow showed an option to update the existing credentials.
