Pin code on browser start

Is it possible to configure bitwarden extension in such a way that it prompts me for the pincode after a browser start?

@uberprutser Welcome to the forum!

Yes, this is possible to configure, although it reduces your vault security.

I assume that you are asking about the browser extension, even though you tagged your post app:desktop? In the browser extension, go to Settings and uncheck the box for the “Unlock with PIN” option. Next, enable the option again (by checking the box). On the screen where you set up your PIN code, there is an option for “Lock with master password on browser restart” (which is enabled by default) — disable this option (by unchecking the checkbox) before saving your PIN.

For the Desktop client app, you can do something similar to prevent the master password being requested each time that you restart the desktop app.

I see that I wasn’t clear enough when I asked my question.
I’m already using the pin code option, and I would like the bitwarden extension to prompt me for the code after a browser start. I know this is apotential security issiue, but it would improve my workflow

(I though the tag app:desktop would be relevant, because I’m not using a mobile device)

I changed the tag to app:browser (and fixed a typo in your topic title).

I understood your question, and the solution is in my original response:

In the browser extension, go to Settings and uncheck the box for the “Unlock with PIN” option. Next, enable the option again (by checking the box). On the screen where you set up your PIN code, there is an option for “Lock with master password on browser restart” (which is enabled by default) — disable this option (by unchecking the checkbox) before saving your PIN.

Follow the above steps (starting with the first sentence, which is required if you are already using the PIN code option).

I still need to click on the bitwarden icon and enter my pincode. This is not as convenient as using the build in password manager.
I would like the extension to behave more like the desktop client, that prompts me for a pincode on start-up. But maybe it’s possible to just use the desktop client and forget about the extension?

What browser are you using?

I used to use Firefox. But after finding out that a webstore wasn’t testing their site for Firefox, I’m now looking for another browser. I’m currently test driving, Brave, Opera and Vivaldi. And this is also the reason I want to use a password manager

For Brave and Vivaldi, set your browser start page to the following:

chrome-extension://nngceckbapebfimnlniiiahkandclblb/popup/index.html?uilocation=popout#/lock

For Opera, set the browser start page to:

chrome-extension://ccnckbpmaceehanjmeomladnmlffdjgn/popup/index.html?uilocation=popout#/lock

Most browsers also allow you to open multiple start pages , so you could add a second start page that is chrome://newtab or whatever you want. Then close the Bitwarden unlock tab after entering your PIN.

Thank you, that worked like a charm
Is something similar also possible on firefox?

Copy the URL from the address bar of the small browser window that pops up when you use Ctrl+Shift+L while your browser extension is locked.

it should look something like the following, but the alphanumeric extension code may differ depending on your set-up:

moz-extension://a01abe27-c9d4-48ef-aed2-a0acca72a6fa/popup/index.html?uilocation=popout#/lock

Great, this should make it easier for me to adapt to bitwarden. You’ve been a great help

Unfortunately loading the link on firefox start up is not working. Looks like it’s loading…

But when I open up a second tab, and put in the same link, I immediately get prompted for a pincode
Sometimes I can enter the pin code, and it seems to accept it, but bitwarden says locked.
Pressing the page reload button after firefox startup, is good work around for this issue.

Did you just use the link that I provided above, or did you use the process of copying the URL from the pop-up window? If you have the URL from the pop-up Window and are still experiencing this issue, then reloading the page when you see the “loading” animation is the best work-around.

FYI, the method I’ve described above is not officially supported by Bitwarden, it is just a trick that (mostly) works to achieve what you were looking for. However, if you can’t get it to work with FireFox, don’t expect any fix from Bitwarden.

I generated the link myself, but now I’m wondering if these links will work for other computer in the browser sync chain. I understand the limitations and I don’t expect anything

Yes please give me link

What browser are you using, and what version of the browser extension?
