On my new mobile I get "An error has occurred" although all settings are correct

Hi all,

I have a strange issue. I changed my iPhone with the latest version (iOS 18). I downloaded Bitwarden and set it up exactly with the same settings as on my iPad (which is perfectly running with Bitwarden).

To doublecheck I used another iPhone with iOS 17, set it up and also on this device I get the error message.

I´m 100% sure all my credentials are correct! It works on my old iPhone, on my iPad and also via Web access (from inside and outside).

2 Factor Auth was disabled for testing purposes but didn’t change anything.

Here is how Bitwarden is set up:

  • Bitwarden is set to “self hosted”
  • Vaultwarden is running on Portainer
  • Portainer is running on my Qnap
  • Gateway and SSL is managed by Nginx, also running on Portainer
  • Bitwarden version on my mobiles: 2024.9.1 (1092)

This all doesn´t make sense to me. If anyone has an idea that would be highly appreciated.

Many thanks

I am also having this issue. Still on iOS 17, but I noticed the app was auto-updated with the new UI. I run a self-hosted Vaultwarden instance in docker. This works with web and the previous version of Bitwarden for iOS.

@Dirk1 @alantan Hi!

You both need to update your server version.

PS: Additionally maybe after that, log out on the mobile app, deinstall and reinstall could help also.

D’oh. Thanks @Nail1684! I was on Vaultwarden server version 1.30.1. Upgrading to 1.32.0 resolved the issue.

That was it. Just click in your Vaultwarden container “recreate” and “re-pull image” and you are done. Now it´s working again. Thank you !!!

Can you explain how to do this?

I’m using ipad OS18 and I’m running into the same error… My iphone on 17.7 doesn’t have this problem.

Thank you!

For me it only happened on devices where Bitwarden wasn´t installed before. On running devices all was fine. But with the new iPhone the issue occurred.

Are you running Vaultwarden on a Portainer? If so check that all data where your credentials are stored are not stored in Portainer. When updating Vaultwarden to the latest version, this data is gone as well.

Vaultwarden is not a Bitwarden product, so there are naturally going to be compatibility issues between the Vaultwarden server and the official Bitwarden client apps from time to time. For users who are self-hosting with Vaultwarden, your best bet is to turn to the Vaultwarden community for support:
