I’m regularly checking Bitwarden updates since 2021, but seems like full offline mode is still not being tackled, despite being on the roadmap a few times? Too sad as Bitwarden is a really nice product otherwise. However, no full offline mode is still a deal breaker for me
I fully support this feature requerst … it’s the only password manager I know that not able to store passwords online and sync them if online is available again… there a re a lot of situations like limited network issues (intranet, secured zones etc.), mobile usages etc… where no online mode is possible… But since the base request is more than 5 years old and full ignored until today I have less than hope, that this will implemented one day …
The same sade feeling with some other long time totally ignored tickets — typically Bitwarden
I self-host vaultwarden (I know it’s not supported directly but this request is for the iOS/macOS application) and whenever I’m not at home or not connected via Tailscale requests to add a new item or update an item fail. I then I have to go out of the app, enable tailscale and wait for it to connect then open Bitwarden again and recreate the entry.
Would it be possible to add a feature where transactions to add/update items could be stored locally until reconnected to the server and then synced?
When using this server, please report any bugs or suggestions directly to us (see Get in touch), regardless of whatever clients you are using (mobile, desktop, browser…). DO NOT use the official Bitwarden support channels.
I service equipment at remote sites. Some sites are so remote they don’t have phone or internet.
Despite this lack of internet I still use bitwarden as I am still connecting to the web interface of isolated devices to troubleshoot, update firmware and backup logs. In BW I search the name of the device then use the “launch” feature to pull up the correct ip address in the browser.
Sometimes i install new equipment or update firmware and the new software requires a password with stricter requirements. There is no way for me to save the new password in bitwarden unless you have WWW access.
I have to generate a new password save it in a txt file on my desktop. Then hope at some point I remember to update my vault when I’m connected to the internet again.
Why can’t it be saved to a local vault and sunk to the cloud later?
Immediately updating the “master copy” avoids “replication or save conflicts” caused by making conflicting changes to a single vault entry on two different off-line devices.
If a conflict arises show the device and time of the changes allow the user to choose which they what to keep or offer to amend one of the names to xxx2
Having no functionality isn’t better than the option I outlined above.
My similar problem is signing into university LANs and not being able to update the new password [changed way too often IMHO] without a connection. I do the update on my phone since my iPad can’t.
I agree. I self host and only sync my moble devices when I’m on the LAN. I’m surprised there haven’t been enough requests, over the years, for this feature to have made its way into a realease. Pretty basic and fundamental functionality for a sync app, really.
I love BW & the dev’s and have been here from the beginning. I still have my BW hat, pens and stickers! However, I’m a bit surprised that this feature hasn’t found it’s way into a release, already. This feature is a must have for those that have mobile devices, self-hosted servers and allow only internal LAN syncing. Fundamental functionality for a sync app, really.
I realize it’s no small feat to implement offline editing at this point but it’s probably only going to get more complicated as newer features are added.
I saw that this feature is not on the 2025 roadmap !
This feature is important to my point off view.
I have praticable cases when adding credential offline is necessary.
I have to go to clients where I have to set different devices with passwords. Sometimes there are behind firewalls and proxies or just not connected to the internet.
The fact that I have to write down the credentials in a none secured way is a possible security breach and having a double vault ( local + bitwarden) adds to much friction in my workflow.
I think its also been missing on the 2024 roadmap. So they might have just thrown the feature away or moved it back as not too important. It would be really cool to see that feature coming as its the only dealbreaker currently holding me back from using bitwarden for myself, since they implented a ssh agent with key support now.
