Make "Fill generated password" function optional in the inline autofill suggestions menu

That’d be a good workaround, but I’d still support the original feature request of disabling it altogether because if I don’t have an account I’d prefer to see nothing instead of a generated password filler.

I just discovered this user forum while researching this very problem. It seems so odd that the default behavior when presented with a login screen is to offer to generate a new password, blocking the login fields in the process. It makes me crazy, 99.9% I already have a password for whatever site I’m attempting to log into and Bitwarden already knows it, because that’s it job!

The autofill feature in general is helpful so I’d rather not disable it, but the endless offers to generate and autofill new passwords is spectacularly annoying. I don’t believe that is the intended behavior and I get the impression that many in this thread don’t fully understand the complaint.

I’ll get off the soapbox now. I love the product and constantly refer people to it…but please fix this yeah? :upside_down_face:

Boy, can I relate to this! My mother is in her late 80s and gets so much joy from using her computer to read the news, play simple games and communicate with friends and family. It keeps her connected to the world in a way nothing else could. Unfortunately, she has no computer literacy and can’t even remember where the Windows start menu is from week to week. Dad is not much better. They also like using the same password they’ve had for decades on most sites, including financial sites! I suggested Bitwarden so they could generate and use complex passwords and NOT have to remember them, something it does a wonderful job of for me. I set it up on mom’s computer, but within a few days I knew it wouldn’t fly. “They keep telling me to make a new password!!” is what I keep hearing over and over. This sort of thing is merely annoying to me, to them it’s a dealbreaker…everything needs to be simple and consistent or it’s not going to work for them.

Sorry to rant, but I really felt your frustration about your similar situation.

I see I’m not the only one seeing the problem here as well. I convinced one of my parents too to start using a password manager and am liking the usability for the most part but having an inline password generator you can’t disable is ridiculous. it gets in the way and makes the process of using the password manager annoying on new or unrecognized sites. Even for a more technical user like myself I prefer generating a password myself on a separate window and making sure my login saved properly. the last thing I want to do is leave a newly created account in limbo because the extension didn’t pick up that I created an account and lost my auto generated password to the void.

Some forum and reddit posters are also playing dumb like they don’t know what we want. We like autofill for created accounts and the option to make a new login. what we don’t like is having specifically and soley the “fill generated password“ suggestion. it is needless, annoying and confusing. And no. Disabling autofill suggestions all together is not and will never be the answer

I do not understand how the option has not been added at this point. it does not sound like a difficult thing to do

Just wanted to share my experience, which I believe is the “intended” way for it to work:

If I have a vault entry, it displays the matching vault entry.

If I have no entry, it follows an account-creation workflow.

After filling in the above and clicking a second time on the bitwarden shield a second time, it offers to save the entry:

This does seem reasonable workflow, but as others have said, it really only makes sense if one is on a registration page. And, it probably ought to auto-save the entry as each step is processed to protect against data loss.

… and if that works better now, it may also be a result of some changes coming with Release 2025.8.0 – though I’m still pondering about the phrase “will now immediately offer”:

I also don’t want BitWarden to suggest generating passwords for me outside of the Extension or App itself. The problem is that I think fundamentally password generation should only happen within the Extension or app, NOT outside of it in a autofill mini-window such as this. Where does this password even end up if you use it ? I know there is an answer (please don’t pedantically answer it) but my point is that it is not an intuitively clear process.

I would like a checkbox within the Autofill Settings that says something like “Display Generated Password Suggestions” that I can turn off.

How have you guys not given us the option at this point to turn off inline autogenerated passwords already? seriously. it can’t be that hard. its probably as easy as setting a value from true to false when toggled. this is the one thing that is keeping me from committing to this password manager fully

am I out of touch? no, it’s the users that are wrong

been having issues with this for years thinking well I’m sure they’ll fix it eventually, reading this thread I’m going to look into alternatives…

@november1911 Welcome to the forum!

Just for the record – the inline generator was added (P: almost…) exactly one year ago. See the Release Notes 2024.11.0.

for the record, hasn’t it been over a year? not that it matters, it’s so frustrating it feels like decades…

so is a fix coming or are we going to spend another >year to focus on the exact timeline and nit pick user issues instead of flicking a switch?

You’re right, it has been 1 year and 26 days since the release of browser extension 2024.11.0.

If you’re a Firefox user, it might actually be less than a year, given the delays that can occur with the Mozilla store.

Sorry, I’m not a BW employee. If I could flick a switch here, I would.

But I still feel, the facts about the matter should be accurate.

Thank you bitwarden, i would like to autofill a generated password into this ipmi console (MegaRAC SP-X 12.61.21) every 3 seconds
There still seems to be no option to turn it off besides creating an entry with a no autofill filter

@Jack23 I moved your comment in to this thread, because it was off-topic to the thread where you had posted it.

First, I should point out that no one from Bitwarden has made any comment to anybody in this thread. The mods who have commented here (myself included) are forum volunteer moderators, and just Bitwarden customers like everybody else here.

Second, I have re-read all of the volunteer mod comments in this thread, and none of them argue against this feature request. The most recent mod comment even said that if they had the power/ability to do so, they would implement this request.

Also, to clarify, this thread was started about 10 months ago, and the feature request was clearly articulated only 9 months ago. The feature request currently has 4 votes.

“asking for an ice cream maker”…

Don’t quite understand how that would work, but I do have to admit that an ice cream maker would be a tasty addition.

A post was split to a new topic: Inline autofill menu shows generator instead of autofill suggestion
