✅ Inline autofill menu (formerly known as overlay popup interface)

Then maybe you should use another product. It‘s for your own good that Bitwarden doesn‘t implement that „feature“.

Thanks @AdamEsq, I see your point of view. I have a similar thing where I have set up Nintendo accounts for my kids to allow purchases from the Nintendo eShop. I control the logins so they’re all in my vault. What I usually do is press the keyboard shortcut again, which cycles through the available credentials. This works for me as they all have different usernames.

Yep I used the keyboard shortcut to cycle logins too (e.g. for webhosting where there a separate accounts), however I take the point re usernames that are just numbers or are less obvious - I’ve voted for the toast idea that was mentioned as I think it would do the job nicely for me.

I agree that this works when the usernames are intuitive like with Nintendo accounts (speaking of which - really need to try Goldeneye on the Switch!) It doesn’t work so well when the usernames are numbers like with skymiles or when, as you indicated, we handle our minors’ accounts and the logins are our own email addresses.

This “toast” thing is interesting and may work for me, however I’m not sure why the tried and true way can’t be implemented for those who don’t like dealing with shortcuts. I would think (and hope) that many of the less-techie people moving to BW are paying for the premium accounts, so these voices should be heard IMO.

I’m not sure if this idea has been said already but I found a workaround that has helped me tremendously to automatically input the passwords quickly. You will need a mouse with at least one programmable button for this. These are my steps for anyone interested:

  1. Disable automatically inputting UN and PW in fields. It could be a security risk.
  2. Enable a keyboard shortcut in BW to input the fields. I used Alt+F.
  3. Go in to your mouse settings and map the programmable button to the same key combination.
  4. Go to the site you need to log in to and click the mouse button you just programmed. BW will input the last credential used on the site. If you have more than one credential for the site, just click the mouse button again and it will cycle to the next one.
Hope that helps some of you.

In my case it worked to open the url in a new (normal) tab with bitwarden.
Additional: After logging in close the popup, click login again and it will detect that you are already logged in.

@Marabunta Welcome to the forum!

Did you mean to post this in a different thread? If you let me know which one, I can move it for you.

No right here in this feature request

I just bought the paid version of BitWarden and I am instantly going back to another password manager because BitWarden doesn’t have the overlay popup feature. I can’t believe it has been requested for over 5 years and nothing have been done.

No, the keyboard shortcut is not a viable option if you manage a lot of accounts.

Even the very basic default built-in Chrome has this feature.

Wasted my money.

@ungovernable Contact support — you should be able to request a refund.

@ungovernable have you considered using the updated autofill-on-pageload functionality?

@bw-admin Yep, this could be a solution if you manage only one account but it’s a mess when you have 50+ accounts for the same site. I really need the overlay interface. So I even thought about using the integrated chrome password manager (which has an overlay interface) along with BitWarden… but nope, if I use the built-in psw manager’s interface to select my login, it will autofill the username and password, but BitWarden will NOT auto-copy the TOTP. So I am forced to use BitWarden’s outdated interface or else the other features aren’t working.

Thanks for the feedback, there are many security issues related to the implementation of overlay-pop-up for the team to consider.

I certainly appreciate that there are important aspects with implementing this feature, and wanting to guarantee users that the software they use is secure. That being said, I feel the need to point out that the original issue this topic stemmed from was opened in late 2016, and we’re almost seven years past then with the horse fairly well beaten to death by the community here. I think it would be fair to argue that in-line fill prompts are almost a universal feature among browsers and operating systems now. Is there any chance you might be able to give us a clearer picture of where the BitWarden company is on this? Ideally if some sort of official update could be posted to the issue in question, or used for tracking progress. Thank you for engaging with us @bw-admin.

Same question I have. Is there a GitHub PR? But let me add the following:

I have been recently using the DuckDuckGo Mac (beta) browser and I see this somewhat implemented.

I guess to expand on @gbcode’s question, does DuckDuckGo’s direct integration with Bitwarden mitigate some of the security concerns? If so, can @bw-admin or someone provide a brief overview on what these security concerns are that DuckDuckGo has mitigated and that because these fixes are directly baked into DuckDuckGo browser, cannot be addressed in other browsers because Bitwarden is not built directly into those browsers?

It‘s not that easy. A browser has more possibilities to display the UI (and providing the feature). BW on the other side has to inject the code which could lead to a lot of problems if the website is malicious.

DDG makes their own browser, which allows them to mitigate the security concern.

One of the users addressed this directly and the solution seems to be pretty ok to me. Just inject the code only if the domain matches a Host/Base Domain that is present in Bitwarden’s password DB. Because if the user saved the password it is safe to assume that they trust this website. Beyond that, it’s at the user’s own risk. Also, this can very well be an optional feature which is turned on by default for all the “online safety” geeks out there.

Someone who has multiple accounts on the same website, this feature provides absolutely ZERO help. I thought the overlay feature was a very basic requirement but five years of non-action seems to suggest that the devs care very little about this request despite all the support it received.
