Improve Server Region Selection in Bitwarden Login UI

As a Bitwarden partner in the EU region, we are experiencing a significant number of support requests due to the current login flow. The region selection is placed in the bottom of the login box, which often leads customers to enter their email and attempt passkey or single sign-on before realizing they need to select the correct region.

Proposed Solutions:

  • Move the region selector above the login box, or

  • Replace the title “Log in to Bitwarden” with a region selector, so users naturally choose their region first before entering credentials

Impact:
This affects all EU-region customers and partners when logging into any Bitwarden pane. Improving this UI will reduce confusion and support overhead, enhancing the overall user experience.

@jakob.notseth Very good idea, I also recommend to change location of the region selector!

@jakob.notseth Welcome to the forum!

As an EU region user myself, I can only support this.

Here is a mock-up I once came up with (in the context of this other now-closed feature request):

+1 for this feature request. I always forget to change the default server because the selector is currently positioned out of sight, whereas it should be the first option.

Thanks all, just to update the team has been working on a change to improve the placement of the selector, thanks for your feedback!

Can the “Accessing: bitwarden.eu” control please me moved up to the top of the screen. Users are continually reporting they can’t logon to Bitwarden when they’ve not selected the right domain here in the EU as you have to scroll down to find it. Also, it would be VERY user friendly if Bitwarden automatically selected bitwarden.eu if there’s an account there and not on bitwarden.com. Current system is highly confusing.

@robnicholson I merged your request with this existing feature request on the same topic.

I think there is also an existing feature request to this part: Automatically localization of users of EU to choose the server "bitwarden.eu" (BTW, feature requests should be about one specific thing only, otherwise the voting system is impossible to interpret)

It’s certainly related although that request is about defaulting to bitwarden.eu if the user happens to be in the EU. Mine was more about making sure the server dropdown box was visible without having to scroll down. Although I’d suggest the logic would be even better the drop down wasn’t visible at all for existing logons - it can work out if the account is bitwarden.com or bitwarden.eu. For the very rare cases where there is an account in both domains, then ask them to determine which domain.

Isn’t this very feature request here, where I moved your post to, exactly about that?

Yes but the link above was to https://community.bitwarden.com/t/improve-server-region-selection-in-bitwarden-login-ui not https://community.bitwarden.com/t/automatically-localization-of-users-of-eu-to-choose-the-server-bitwarden-eu. Although all related…

Firstly, the server drop down box needs moving up the screen as mentioned as it’s not visible on many laptop screens and therefore leads to confusion and extra IT support tickets.

Secondly, I’d propose the drop box defaults to “Automatic” and on logging on it uses bitwarden.com or bitwarden.eu as required. The majority of existing accounts will only be in one domain. For those that happen to be in both domains, the user would have the select the right one.

It would also be great if there was a way for enterprise customers to preselect or limit enduser to one server location in the desktop and mobile app :thinking:

I just created a ticket on GitHub about exactly this:

@mikulabc Welcome to the forum!

As an EU region user myself, I do see the issue with this.

Too bad – but expected – that your issue was closed. I personally would consider this an UI/UX “issue”. Dozens and hundreds of people wondering why they can’t login… and in those cases where it’s just the wrong server region – that selector is far down (depending on the client) and small as he**…

I think I’m very familiar with Bitwarden now – but guess what happens when I deinstall a BW client and try to login again… I always forget this and try to login to the wrong server region first:roll_eyes:

(Sorry, usually I can keep it together here… but that topic is emotional by now… :sweat_smile: – PS: Probably also because I think: this error is so unnecessary – if it just would be designed differently…)

@Nail1684 I think if the message were translated into costs saved in customer support hours saved by not having to spend time answering requests about logins not working, this ticket would quickly turn into an URGENT INCIDENT :wink:

@mikulabc Probably… but in all fairness – @dwbit wrote not long ago, that they would work on an improvement:
