Trying to import Codes from the Authenticator App made by 2FA but not working. Any help would help.
@raptor Welcome to the forum!
Do you mean you want to import TOTP codes that are stored locally on the Bitwarden authenticator app into your Bitwarden vault?
No, I exported codes from the other Authenticator (2Stable) and want to import them into Bitwarden and wanted to know if Bitwarden could import the export file from the 2Stable Authenticator.
You mean into your Bitwarden vault?
Yes. into the Bitwarden Vault.
I read someplace yesterday a list off apps that Bitwarden can import from but can’t seem to find the list this morning. Anyways I am beginning to think that the exported .jason from the 2FA app is the odd one ot of all the Authenticator’s on the web.
Okay, thanks. I changed the category to “Password Manager” then for the “integrated authenticator”.
But either way, there is no direct import path for TOTP seed codes.
Is there a way to edit the .json file and import manually into Bitwarden?
Technically yes, but I imagine it would be quite cumbersome, and require coding of a custom script.
A more efficient approach would be if you could find a way to convert your JSON export into a CSV format. That will make data conditioning for import into Bitwarden much easier.
Could you post a sample of what one entry of the JSON export looks like (with the URL and TOTP secret redacted)? Please click the </> button in the forum composer’s toolbar when inserting the copied code into your response.
I am beginning to think that it isn’t worth it. I ran the 2stable Authenticator for about four years at 20 bucks a year and then this year they seemed to get greedy and upped the price by almost 100% but over that time the sites I use the Authenticator on have gone to using 2FA, like Wordpress, Gmail among others and the list is slowly getting cut down. Now when logging into sites it’s all done through the browser and all the enduser has to click on one button. Thanks for your help.
@raptor Just be aware, that Bitwarden has no “merge” feature here. So if you have existing login items and just want to add the TOTP seed codes, after such an import of a CSV you would have two items in your vault then (the old one and the new one with the TOTP seed code).
If it’s only (more or less) a handful of TOTP codes, manually copying & pasting a few codes from your JSON file into your login items might be quicker.
I have only used the Bitwarden Authenticator on one site in the past week and hopefully is in the Vault. I never used the 2Stable app on that site and haven’t used any Authenticator on any other site in the past month or two. Like I mentioned Wordpress and Gmail don’t require an Authenticator any more.
