How to create new passwords/entries "securely"

Currently when I generate a password in Bitwarden I need to copy the new password to the clipboard and then go create a new entry in Bitwarden and paste the password into the new entry. This is a security risk. It would be greate to be able to create a new login right from the password generator screen and have the newley generated password copied right into the new entry.

@A-Human Welcome to the forum!

As the topic where you posted in is already a bit older - and the Bitwarden apps have changed since the last posts there - I moved your post into a topic of it’s own.

So, now, you didn’t reveal about which Bitwarden app you are talking (browser extension? mobile app? …), so I’ll keep it short for starters:

With the browser extension (but it’s similar for all other apps), you can click on + New :

… and choose “Login” (for login item). There, you can click the generator symbol for the password field:

… configure the generator as you like, and when you’re finished, click “Use this password”. It will get filled in in the password field of your new login item.

Don’t forget to click “save” – and your new password is directly stored in the new login item.

PS: If you want to fill in the password on the website where you need it, one nice possibility is to use drag & fill (though only possible in the “View item” mode - and only possible with the browser extension and the desktop app, if I remember correctly).

@A-Human Welcome!

Just to make this extra clear — you are correct that it’s a security risk, but your claim that you “need to” copy/paste the password is incorrect.

The only way I can make sense of your comment is if you are not yet using the Bitwarden browser extension (which does offer the required functionality to generate, store, and use passwords without ever copying any secrets to the clipboard — as demonstrated in the response from @Nail1684). But if that was the case, then you would presumably also be using copy/paste when filling out login forms. Since you only mention the creation of new login items, not the use of credentials for logging in, your comment raises a lot of questions

Hmmmm… only OP can answer that. But it’s not the only way I would hope – if you just use the “general generator”, it’s also not far fetched, to use the “copy to clipboard” function and then create a new entry with that (when one didn’t discover the generator in the password field yet)…
