Generator Settings lost after logout

That is surprising (since it is Chromium-based), and maybe reportable as a GitHub issue. Vivaldi does seem to be in the minority, though, as generator settings are preserved in Chrome, Firefox, and Edge (as tested by @Neuron5569 and me above). Are any of your other preferences lost on logout (other than the PIN), such as the vault timeout settings?

Another test to do (I may do it myself if you don’t) is to check whether having a second logged-in account (using the account switcher) makes a difference in the behavior. In my experience, the vault cache for all logged in accounts are contained within the same file, so perhaps more data are preserved on logout of an account if there is also a need to preserve cached data stored for a second account .

Either my glasses are dirty - or @Neuron5569 confirmed, that the generator settings are not preserved on Edge:

PS:

… will investigate later…

You are right, it is my   :glasses:   that need a cleaning! :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

So:
Vivaldi & Edge → Settings lost on logout.
Chrome & Firefox → Settings preserved on logout.

@grb @Nail1684

I should stress the word doesn’t, for Edge. Not even after uninstalling and reinstalling.

The vault filter is also reset, even during the session.

On Firefox, my generator settings get also lost… on extension 2025.5.0 – @Neuron5569 didn’t you test it with 2024.12.4 (only) on Firefox?

And I’m not convinced already, that it is system-/configuration-independent. I’ll test my Win 11 PC later – on my Win 11 laptop so far:

Vivaldi & Firefox → Settings lost on logout.
Brave → Settings preserved on logout.

I assume that you are not implying that you were expecting your settings to survive the uninstall/reinstall, but rather that the loss of generator settings on logout persisted after a reinstall (?).

FYI, I also performed some tests in Edge, and can confirm:

  • The generator settings (but no other preferences) are lost when logging out.
  • The loss of generator settings on logout occurs whether there is a second account logged in in the account switcher or not.

Yes. Didn’t test later versions.

On Edge 2025.5.1, none of the Settings’ settings were lost for me. I wasn’t using PIN.

@mutilator that is a completely unrelated issue (which you can read more about here).

Yes, after the but.

@Neuron5569

To be honest - I’m a bit confused now, what exactly you mean.

So, you mean the other settings, right? (because none of the Settings sounded to me for about two minutes like “not even the generator settings…”)

PS: I hope, this is already the answer:

So in Firefox:

2025.5.0 → Generator settings lost on logout.

2024.12.4 → Generator settings preserved on logout.

To which I can add:

2024.11.2 → Generator settings preserved on logout.

Thus, this does have the hallmarks of a bug/regression.

For the record, in my tests with Chrome (in which the generator settings are preserved), the extension version is 2025.5.0 — thus, there is definitely some browser-specific problem in extension version 2025.5.0.

Ha, just only to this I can now add:

Firefox 2025.5.0 on my Win 11 laptop → Generator settings lost on logout.

Firefox 2025.5.0 on my Win 11 desktop → Generator settings not lost on logout.

→ it’s not only the extension or only the browser

Could the version of Firefox (as opposed to the bitwarden extension for firefox) be coming into play?

Grasping at straws, especially given that the issue being reported in other browser brands.

One more data point: In Edge, the loss of generator settings on logout occurs also in extension version 2025.5.1.

Here my “complete picture”:

Generator settings lost on logout:

  • Vivaldi (PC and laptop)
  • Firefox (laptop)
  • Brave (PC)

Generator settings preserved on logout:

  • Firefox (PC)
  • Brave (laptop)

(all on Win 11, latests updates, and all on extension versions 2025.5.0)

(I could also test on Chrome and Edge, if you want to, but I think it’s already clear, that as I wrote before, it’s not only the extension/browser combination alone…)

… feeling adventurous today, already downloading the newest update?

It’s set to auto-update. I’m not aware of any way to disable auto-updates in chromium browsers.

It’s a shame it was limited to just two minutes. You should be able to decide that for yourself. Thank you.

What else matters then?
