Customize default actions (other than View or Autofill) when clicking vault items?

Everybody agrees with this, but if you think that having the item launch a webpage is the “most rational” action (even for a login item), then you are projecting your own personal preferences.

UI design principles (and common sense) would have the largest and most easily accessible click target (i.e., the item name & icon) trigger the most common action, so we do seem to agree on this premise. However, for most Bitwarden users, the most common function is evidently autofilling. For many others, it is opening the vault item to view (and/or edit) its information. Therefore, these are the two options currently available in the browser extension UI.

One reason why alternative functions (e.g., launch) are not available to configure as the default click action is likely the fact that no other action makes sense to perform for all item types (logins, notes, cards, identities, and SSH keys), and assigning a custom action that is different for each type of vault item would violate another UI design principle — the same action (clicking a vault item name) should not produce different results.

You are probably transferring habits and expectations from other contexts (bookmark managers or Google search results).

Per my previous responses, you have two options (other than retraining yourself to work differently in Bitwarden):

  • Use a bookmark manager instead of Bitwarden for launching your favorite websites. Chrome, Firefox, and other browsers have the ability to sync bookmarks across devices, or there are cross-browser, cross-device solutions like Floccus or BookmarkOS.
  • Open a Feature Request to make a formal proposal that Bitwarden develop the functionality that you are looking for.
