Can't login via passkey with my Yubikey

Hello,

I’m trying to setup a Yubikey 5C Nano (firmware version 5.7.4) as a passkey but it’s not working. I tried it both on Chromium and on Firefox and in both the process goes as follows:

  • Go to Settions ->Security ->Passkey → Click on “Manage”
  • Enter my master password, then add a nickname for the key, then click on “Read key”
  • The browser prompts me to touch my key (it does not ask for its pin) and I touch it
  • Got the confirmation “Use the “Save” button below to activate this security key for two-step login.”
  • Click on “Save”
  • Got confirmation “Success”

(Note that at this point I expected to see Bitwarden registered as a passkey in the Yubico Authenticator app like I see other websites / services but it does NOT show up.)

  • Logout
  • Try to login again using the “Log in with passkey” option
  • It prompts for the pin and for me to touch it.
  • Got message “Passkey authentication failed. Please try again.”

The same problem happens whether I’m using Chromium or Firefox. And I tried removing all credentials and registering them again.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

@billiken Welcome to the forum!

I believe, you set up a 2FA-“passkey” for Bitwarden, but that is only a 2FA (FIDO2) credential – and won’t work for “Log in with passkey”.

In the Bitwarden web vault, go to Settings → Security → Master password → Log in with passkey, and click “New passkey” to add a new BW-login-passkey.

Oh, silly me, looking at the wrong place. :person_facepalming: That worked!

Thanks for the quick and helpful response.
