Cannot Enable Biometrics on Edge Browser

I’m using Edge browser on Windows 11, all latest updates installed as of 7.4.2025. I have the Bitwarden windows app installed, and I have the browser extensions for Edge and Chrome installed. The Bitwarden Edge extension shows a date of 2025.6.1

I can enable unlock with Biometrics in the Chrome extension, but in Edge the option is greyed out.

I’ve tried restarting the browser, reinstalling the plugin, etc. It all works in Chrome, not not Edge.

Hello,

I’m having the same issue. Chrome works fine, but Edge doesn’t work. I’ve tried reinstalling the app, extension - factory reset the device.

My environment is Entra ID so the extension pushes out via Intune and the Bitwarden app too. It’s a bummer this happens on Edge, since we are trying to push users to use edge, given SSO just works there for everything else.

It turned out to be something in our environment causing this.

We had an Edge Security Baseline configured in Intune. Removing that baseline fixed the issue. Narrowed it down to being this policy:

Native Messaging
Allow user-level native messaging hosts (installed without admin permissions)
Set to Disabled.

Could that be why it’s not working for you?

What version is your BW desktop app then?

2025.6.1 is the version of the desktop sw

how do you edit this setting, I don’t find it in settings.

Hm, if it were me, I would probably now try to “reset” it all first.

For that, deactivate biometric unlock in the desktop app first. And then reinstall/deinstall both the the desktop app and BW Edge extension in the following way:

  1. log out in the BW app/extension (be sure you can log in again! → master password and 2FA or “new device email verification code”)
  2. deinstall the BW app/extension
  3. check if the local data of the app is deleted (Data Storage | Bitwarden)
  4. restart your computer
  5. re-install the BW app/extension
  6. log in again

After that, I would set up biometric unlock again - first in the desktop app (including “Allow browser integration”) and then in the Edge extension.

I did all this.
There’s something funny going on.
I installed desktop app, logged in, then installed the browser extension. Logged in on browser extension, and then was able to enable the biometrics.
It logged me out, and so I tried logging in again…
This time the option to enable biometrics is greyed out.
The option is no longer available to enable biometrics.
I’m back where I was before.

Went back to the desktop app and tried to enable browser integration and got an error, “Browser integration is not currently available in the Microsoft store version…”

Installed the windows “non Windows Store” version and I got this to work.

Very good! – But if you had installed the Microsoft app store version before, this shouldn’t have worked either:

To be fair, I only looked at the option (not greyed out) I didn’t actually try it.

… and for readers, this was a sign, that the desktop app must be working correctly for you… Anyway, seems you could figure it out now!
