Cannot enable biometrics - Desktop app is not open

I have a few users who seem not to be able to enable biometric unlock in the Chrome extension (2025.2.2).
Their experience is:

  • Turn on Unlock TouchID in the desktop app
  • Turn on Browser Intergration in the desktop app
  • Keep the app running
  • In the Chrome extension, tick the option for Unlock with biometrics
  • Click Allow in the modal asking for permission to communicate with the desktop app:
  • Go back to extension settings to click again but the option is greyed out:

Have restarted everything, cleared Chrome cache, reinstalled app and extension. Tried in a new Chrome profile, same behaviour.

What version of the Desktop app do you have installed, and could you please confirm that the app is in fact still running when you get to the step “Go back to extension settings to click again”?

I have sometimes found after granting the permission in chrome, I have had to close and reopen the Bitwarden browser extension’s settings to un-grey the box. I am on Windows, so our mileage may vary.

Yes, this morning after pushing settings buttons a few times this eventually worked.
Have managed now to get all users that were seeing this issue set up.
