BitwardenTools unmaintained / abandoned

Dear Bitwarden Community,

I wanted to bring to everyone’s attention some concerning news regarding BitwardenTools, a project that some of us have relied on. The project’s GitHub repository (GitHub - corpusops/bitwardentools: ** UNMAINTAINED/ABANDONED CODE / DO NOT USE ** bitwarden python api client and additional tools like for migrating from vaultier to bitwarden (bitwarden_rs) ) has been officially declared abandoned and unmaintained as of December 10, 2024.

This abandonment would directly linked to the new EU Cyber Resilience Act (EU Regulation 2024/2847) according to their developers.

As a fellow community member, I believe we should:

  1. Start planning migrations away from BitwardenTools if we’re using it
  2. Share information about viable alternatives within our community
  3. Support each other during the transition period

While there are, according to developers, ongoing discussions about potentially transferring the project to another entity, no decisions would have been made yet. The source code would remain available for educational purposes until March 15, 2025, but we should all be actively looking for alternatives.

This situation highlights a broader challenge facing open-source projects under the new EU regulations. As a community, we should be mindful of these changes and their impact on the developers who create tools we rely on.

If anyone has found good alternatives to BitwardenTools or wants to share migration strategies, please contribute to the discussion. We’re all in this together.

Best regards
