Now using Desktop app 2024.12.1 (34750) and browser integration no longer works. When clicking the option, it says an error has occured without any extra info. And as before, the browser extions biometric obviously does not work.

My extension version is 2024.12.2. I’m on macOS 15.2.

Is this a known issue?

Works fine for me, Windows 11, Desktop App 2024-11-2, chrome browser app 2024.12.2.

Occasionally, after an update is can be necessary to disable and reenable the biometrics in both the desktop app and the browser extension to get things behaving again. Happens to me about once a year.

This problem appeared for me on MacOS Sequoia 15.1.1 with Chrome browser 131.0.6778.86 (Official Build) (arm64) updating to the Bitwarden extension version 2024.12.4.

The workaround was to completely sign out of the extension, then sign in again.

Bitwarden browser extension says: biometric unlock is unavailable because the bitwarden desktop app is closed. But it’s not. Bitwardes is opened, I am logged in to my account.

App version 2025.1.3 (36834).
Extension version: 2025.1.2.

They changed how the clients work with Windows hello in v2025.1.3. You may want to wait until the extension is updated to v2025.1.3 to see if it will work again.

I have both app and extension version v2025.1.3

I see the same behavior Ale5ander is seeing.

Bitwarden browser extension says: biometric unlock is unavailable because the bitwarden desktop app is closed. But it’s not. Bitwardes is opened, I am logged in to my account.

Run into the same problems as @TrackDaddy5 and @Ale5ander (probably others). Found a solution:

Within desktop app, be sure to go to File > Settings > and enable an option to Allow browser integration

None of the apps made it clear that this option should be enabled (seems disabled by default), before things work.

Thanks @ebw. That worked for me.

Two step process. 1) allow browser integration in the desktop app. 2) turn on integration in the plugin.

@ebw @TrackDaddy5

It’s also in the Help Sites: Unlock with Biometrics → Tab “Browser Extension” → Section “Enable for browser extensions”:

Can’t find the second step. Where I need to look?

I think @TrackDaddy5 just meant with the second step:

→ the desktop app must be running and unlocked - and “Allow browser integration” must be checked in the settings of the desktop app… and, “unlock with biometrics” must be activated for the desktop app as well for it to work, I think:

I have also found that checking “Unlock with biometrics” sometimes causes the desktop to do an immediate biometric check and then the extension does NOT finish checking the unlock box. The solution is to repeat the process. The second time, the user-verification is skipped and the checkbox retains the check.

Got it. Thank you!
