I am using Windows 11 & Edge
When I wanted to register on this forum, I clicked on the “First Name” field
I would have expected Bitwarden to open and auto fill myt details. Like 1Password does.
But Bitwarden did not!
Why not?
I had to open the browser extension to get Bitwarden to work
And after opening the extension, I had to enter my master password. I want to use biometrics or a pin. Master passwords are long and prone to data entry mistakess
I need Bitwarden to always open when I am filling in forms in any browser
To protect your vault data, Bitwarden encrypts all of your stored information, and only stores encrypted data on your computer hard drive. Therefore, it is not possible for the browser extension to autofill any information until after the vault has been decrypted. In Bitwarden, vault decryption happens when you unlock the browser extension (or Desktop app, mobile app, or web vault). Unlocking results in the decrypted vault data being stored temporarily in your computer’s volatile memory until the vault is locked again — thus, as long as your vault remains unlocked, the browser extension will be able to autofill.
Leaving the decrypted data available for use at any time is not secure, as anybody with temporary access to your device (locally, or remotely via malware) would be able to immediately steal the full contents of your vault. Nonetheless, if this is what you want, Bitwarden does offer users the option to set a preference to never lock their vault: go to Settings > Account Security > Session Timeout, and set the Timeout period to “Never”.
While in Settings > Account Security, make sure that the option Timeout Action (under Session Timeout) is set to “Lock” and not “Log out”. Then, under Unlock Options at the top of the Account Security page, you can enable “Unlock with PIN” or “Unlock with Biometrics”. Biometric unlock requires the browser extension to interact with the Desktop app, so if you prefer this option, please carefully read the set-up instructions available here.
The Bitwarden browser extension window will not open automatically, but you can use the inline autofill menu, which can be configured to pop up automatically when you place the cursor in a relevant form field.
